JD Sports now expects pretax profit before exceptional items for the financial year ending January 28 at the top end of a GBP933 million and GBP985 million market consensus range.

The very top of that range represents growth of 4.0% from GBP947.2 million the year prior.

JD said revenue growth over the autumn and winter was 10%, versus around 5% earlier in the year, helped by improving stock availability in the United States, which accounts for about 30% of its sales.

European stores account for over 30% of JD's sales, a bigger portion than JD's home market of Britain, and the company was seeing strong numbers in France, Spain and Italy, Schultz said.

It doesn't matter what the revenue is for Boohoo.

It matters what the net profit/loss is for Boohoo.

The trading update is on Thursday 19 January 2023 and scb if you'd clicked on the Boo Live RNS above then you'd have found this for yourself.

It was the pandemic level of online sales which pushed the Boohoo share price to more than £4.

The expectation was that online sales would remain at the pandemic levels. They haven't and so share prices retreated.

People have returned to shops/stores, online sales have gone down from the pandemic levels and this will affect Boohoo's share price.

It's not the revenue that matters to the Boohoo share price.

It's the net profit/loss that determines the Boohoo share price.

I would think Card Factory's update released today revealing online sales were down 27.6% year on year is the reason for the fall of 6.19% to 37.76p for the Boohoo share price today.

Online sales are down nearly 10% from their highest level during the pandemic. This is the comparison which matters and not the comparison to pre pandemic levels.

In some cases like Card Factory online sales are down 27.6% year on year.

From Card Factory's Trading Update released today:-

Customers returning to the high street and impact of Royal Mail strikes saw online sales down 27.6% year-on-year. cardfactory.co.uk sales remain up significantly in comparison to pre-pandemic levels +85.2% 3Y.

Online sales may have gone up from pre pandemic levels however they've gone down from post pandemic levels.

It looks to me from the likes of Next and Card Factory's updates, many people returned to buying in shops rather than online. Maybe, it was the novelty value of being able to buy in shops/stores again.

The pandemic proved great for online.

Now, people are returning to buy in shops/stores and online is losing out.

Eventually, people will return to online again, however, I think this will take some time i.e at least a year and maybe longer.

I think one good thing for Boohoo is that the gross margin for US sales is 60 to 62%. That's much higher than for the sales in the UK, for sales in Europe and also for sales in the Rest fo the World.

So if Boohoo can get their sales back in the US to where they were and keep on increasing them, then that would be brilliant. However, I don't see any of these sales rising in the US until at least 2024.

Boohoo will need to spend loads of money in 2023 marketing Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing and Nasty Gal all over again in the US to increase sales.

Also, there are bound to be costs and teething problems with the US distribution centre that will need to be ironed out during 2023.

The most important thing for me will be how well Boohoo manage their revolving credit facility for FY23 and FY24.

For me, I can't see Boohoo making a net profit until at least 2024. Maybe, I'm wrong.

Looks like I got the date right for the next Boohoo trading update.

I had a reply to say Boohoo will be announcing the date of their trading update tomorrow.

No-one knows for sure, so it could well be released on Thursday 19 January 2023.

We'll all find out in due course.

In the meantime, I've emailed Mahmud Kamani, John Lyttle, Caro Kane and Investor Relations to ask them when will the trading update be released.

It is extremely poor that Boohoo have not updated their financial calendar for their investors.

The financial calendar was always updated prior to the release of any Boohoo trading update so sharecast, hl, lse, bloombergs, reuters, etc would release the date on their company diaries for the week ahead's trading updates, results and so on.

As far as I can remember, Boohoo have always released their trading update the week after Asos.

My point is that it looks extremely poor not to update the Boohoo financial calendar and Boohoo have never behaved like this until June 2022.

Boohoo have never simply dropped a trading update without prior notice unless it was a profit warning. Boohoo have always put the dates of their trading updates on their Financial Calendar prior to releasing their trading updates.

Boohoo have only been crap at updating their financial calendar since June 2022. Before June 2022, Boohoo were excellent at updating their financial calendar. See the link for yourself.

It was always on the Boohoo financial calendar prior to the release of their trading updates in January so the date was known beforehand for things like the sharecast company diary.
