@numpty5: I can assure you that a large international container vessel could never be driven by VRFB, never. After 25 days at sea some of these vessels turn around in four hours (depending upon the number of containers exchanged).
This is not to say that some form of energy recovery/electrical backup systems could not be employed.

@YTSS: We do ship to India but to date I have only found reporting sites which are two years out of date. I have occasionally found individual Indian steel Company indications of receiving Nitrovan but it is in small quantities and I have been unable to find verifiable evidence. I have looked at sea routes to China and there are some direct and indirect services but of course no import data available to mere mortals such as I.

I do continue to search around the web for more information but the USA has by far the most transparent system out there.

@Alfacomp: Maersk Vilnius berthed in Baltimore yesterday, we wait to see the landing report later in the week. Reported today was MSC Annick's delivery of 7th July and another 37,983Kg into secure storage.

Alfacomp: The advertised reasoning was economy as per the Wiki article. Crew costs, security, build costs etc.

When one considers the politics of allowing a Nuclear vessel to enter a commercial port it is not surprising that it would not be feasible for a vessel to tramp around the world freely. A comparable issue might be Concorde, a fantastic aircraft which was limited by politics to only a few available routes.

The reported contaminated effluent issue would have been the final straw for worldwide trading.

I am sure that some of our great researchers could add to this but I am conscious that this is a little off topic so will look forward to another great week in the Vanadium story. GLA

@LionelGreen: Interesting piece of historical journalism the subject of which has been appropriately actioned by shipping Companies around the world as indeed has car pollution to an equivalent extent.

As for Nuclear powered shipping, the once nuclear powered NS Savannah is actually moored at Pier 13 in Baltimore, Maryland, Just a few ship lengths ahead of where our Nitrovan is off-loaded.

@RichKen; I think that you captured the reality in your point... using VRFB in ships was certainly a great idea. That is something every boat manufacturer in the world should be looking at given the emissions reduction...

Boats and Ships are very different things Fjord1 are probably the world leader in electric marine transport, their largest ferry in-build will trade 1 hour journeys and charge at each end.

A 25 day voyage with 14000 containers on board will be an incredible challenge. Electrical generation for the containers themselves can be in the region of 5 to 10 Mw, (I have not checked these figures recently however so don't take these figures as gospel)

VRFB assistance could be considered for economising the main plant but not for replacement at this time.

Only my opinion of course.
