@Pdub: keeping to the positive trend, your point..Vametco on target to produce 3680 mtV in 2018..There are some who think that plant upgrades may have been applied towards the end of June/early July. If this were the case it would take a few weeks to measure any improvement.

With the past weekend's delivery to Baltimore the 2018 estimated contribution has edged to a little over $46 million,this being about 52% of total sales. I fully support the recognition given to the BOD today, well deserved alongside the rest of the work we are expecting to be announced soon.

A very important upgrade of the plant began mid-July, reducing current output in order to raise the year end production figures. Would this be something SP Angels would be aware off? Only my off the cuff speculation for discussion only.

About Vametco

Vametco is located near Brits on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. The integrated operation comprises a vanadium ore mine and a processing plant that produces Nitrovan®, a trademark product sold in major steel markets across the world. The Vametco mining operation uses open pit bench mining methods to mine a well-defined orebody. The deposit is continuous with limited faulting and dips in a northerly direction at approximately 19 degrees.

ROM ore is fed into a primary, secondary and tertiary crushing circuit, followed by milling and magnetic separation to produce magnetite concentrates. The magnetite concentrates are fed into the extraction process which includes the kiln for roasting followed by leaching and precipitation. Thereafter the precipitated vanadium as ammonium metavanadate is converted to modified vanadium oxide (MVO) in rotary calciners. MVO is fed into the mix plant and finally into the shaft furnaces to produce NitrovanTM.

@knutsfordnotary, Bulk carriers and tankers it could be feasible but those flat surfaces are often underwater and open to incredible water forces so a design challenge there. Container ships have very limited free surface area as the containers occupy the deck space and are moved around so often but they do sit higher. Not trying to be negative: as was pointed out yesterday we never know what is around the corner in the field of technology.

@Numpty5: In my opinion, for international shipping and for propulsion..No. For onboard power savings ..Maybe, lets face it the units consist of standard shipping containers so can be loaded and positioned to suit if there is available deadfreight. Waste heat recovery systems are designed for electrical generation which could be used to charge the electrolyte as is achieved ashore. Delicate machinery does suffer in a marine environment so may be another factor.

@numpty5: It is unusual to exchange all containers at one port or for a turnaround in 4 hours but it does happen I track the vessels both at sea and alongside, recently I believe that Baltimore was taken out of the schedule because of the small number of containers that had to be dropped off there. These seem to have been dropped off in Norfolk USA and taken on by barge. I was watching the Grand Prix this afternoon so didn't go into great detail but thinking on a bit more a trend is growing out of California for shore power to be supplied to a vessel whilst it is alongside. This would provide a more suitable use for VRFB. As an aside the vessels on the SAF routes are not the large ships which hit the headlines for pollution.

@faramog: I have no problem with concept thinking. When you say lake size charging pits I am not sure of your scale. Large crude carriers average 2 million barrels of oil, considering that amount being in transit and the same in the lake being charged (for one vessel project) how long will it take to produce the electrolyte? I was in a discussion group many years ago considering growing biomass in ballasted tankers, I don't think that it ever moved past the round table though.

@faramog: agreed, Don't forget to add electrical generation in your calculations, basic tanker 500 to 700 Kw. Container vessel add 10 to 20 Mw for containers.
