Just a few of my thoughts on today’s RNS3 Sep 2024 13:12
I think the market has way underestimated the enormity of today’s RNS. I for one had no idea what a “hyperscale data centre or center” was until I looked into it. I put “or center” because I have read that the USA has by far the majority (currently over 5000) of these, owned by companies such as Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft to name a few. In addition there are over 500 both in the UK and Germany.
I presume at the moment the majority of end of life HDDs are scrapped/shredded as no one has perfected the technology to remove the magnets easily and cost effectively and that is where the collaboration with Inserma comes into play.
It appears that this technology is set to revolutionise the way hyperscale data centres, shredders and (non magnet) recyclers handle end of life HDDs, loudspeakers and electric motors. As stated in the RNS a Voice call Motor which contains the magnet can be removed in less than 3 seconds along with the centre spindle which then facilitates the downstream shredding of the rest of the HDD.
Also stated in the RNS “The technology not only provides a steady neodymium (“NdFeB”) magnet scrap feed to HyProMag, but also has major benefits for sustainable, secure and low cost recycling of HDDs
Without knowing all the cost details I assume the main benefit for data centres, shredders and recyclers will be the enormous savings due to the magnets being removed before the remaining materials are processed.
Also it had crossed my mind on a few occasions where we were going to source all the end of life magnets to recycle and so this is one of the solutions and will be a massive benefit to us.
Not just a win /win but a WIN, WIN, WIN iimho👍.
