Trump has the biggest media presence but he isn't the one who has closed the Strait of Hormuz, that is Iran. And Trump isn't alone in attacking Iran, there is also Israel.

PS: forget who made this comparison, but the point was made that, in Suez, the refusal of the US to back the British and the French marked the end of the empire and that Iran is close to being the reverse situation, with the British and the French (amongst others) failing to back (in full) the US.

On the other hand, agree Trump would dearly like the "off-ramp" allowing him to claim victory and pull out.

Wish I could share your belief in some kind of an underlying plan but I don't, not within the US administration (Netanyahu is different, he knows what he is doing).

Think the US assumed the regime would either collapse or be overthrown and, since this hasn't happened, they've been largely making it up on the hoof ever since.

They don't even seem to have taken seriously the risk of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which everybody was warning about beforehand.

But Trump continues to threaten Iran's civil infrastructure when his argument is with the regime and not with the people.

In so doing, he seems to recognise the limits of what exclusively military action can achieve.
