The latest Investing Matters Podcast with Jean Roche, Co-Manager of Schroder UK Mid Cap Investment Trust has just been released. Listen here.
ShadowFall founder Matt Earl, whose firm has profited from a short position in Burford, said the company’s accounting was “incredibly subjective”. Marius Nasta of rival litigation funder Redress Solutions said: “Forecasting what defendants will do in litigation is like trying to forecast the weather two months in advance. It’s lunacy.”
On Thursday, Burford issued a rebuttal, calling the Muddy Waters report “false and misleading”. It said it had received clean audit opinions from accountants EY since 2010, and the short-selling attack showed “the hallmarks of market manipulation”.
But the damage has been done. Law firms are lining up to sue Burford on behalf of investors who feel they have been duped. The litigation funder is now the target.
The Gotham report will be a flop unless it has substance / we have had unsubstantiated stabs at area's of trading that could be a problem / were explained and have been accepted by experts. Gotham probably have been caught with shorts that went wrong and need a retrace to get out of trouble.
The report will probably have little to add - they could have asked a question live webcast everybody had a chance to put Bur on the back foot / which proves they were not frightened of anything that might be out there. Tesco fixed their accounts fraud on a massive scale nothing much happened. Bur are following the regs are solvent and are innovative in their approach,
Tear factor is there though and the big players will milk it and are probably behind it. A lot of funds short stocks they own = volatility means profit though if you are game for it. Bring it on.
The volatility is calming down / so this looks as though this is changing more people will stay in. The share will motor up if buy backs start giving a feel of greater stability. At one point I was down £1700 too reckless - now in profit £700. Sold half £4500 will leave in. I am sure many of you have done far better . Maybe you will not hold longer term. Good luck whatever you decide. I thought it would end 10% up at close / did drop 15.5 - current 11,5 Which is when a lot of you got in again if you were out then add if drop first thing unlikely
Large buys after hours again.

am hoping for 10% addition to the price by close. If people buy in at thie current price first thing will be surprised. The mm's will make money if they can get people in the mood will try different ways. will be intersting if not a little stressful.
they have a good target with Burford who admitted as much. How long is a piece of string. The cases cost capital outlay the profit loss can't be predicted unlike a toy manufacturer how many Muddy water toys do you think you would sell assuming these were marketable / likely profit for the year . Their track record over 10years is what investors are buying into however there are grey areas that can be purposefully made to look unsound by the muddy types. Go private is the answer they should imv.
Burford will protect their own interests / the directors bought in at a nice price yesterday 633 I think. They care little about the small holders just lip service. muddy f's will move onto an easier target / they don't want a fight just easy money. The evidence is nowhere / evidence of what. The authorities have not got involved muddy have not reported insolvency / just intimated it without evidence. This is the 4th stock have had this done to other similar creatures have the same game. Shorting should bre prevented by law. Its no different from insider trading / you have info you know will efffect the share price and use it for gain.

Traded a bit today v volatile found it difficult to sell when I wanted system HL was playing up. Made £900 in wifes account sold.
had to go out bought 7k in my account in various tranches av just under £8 was up 32 / 34 per cent 3.30 ish anyway would probably have sold half if price right leading up to close wife wanted me to take her out.
lesson buy on drop not on rise wait end of day or beginning to make sure. be carefull was a bit gung ho had lost £1200 on my existing Bur shares 70% down now 17% down less wifes profit / is my money about 10% may lose a bit to start will hold keep nerve.
conjecture - 2nd guessing blah blah - the deal is on it will have some snags along the way - these tiddlers are volatile stick with it or chicken out - I post on these places and wonder why - it really makes no difference yet people get so hot under the collar - anything said on here won't make any difference. Bye
The decline in the share price is v small one wonders if this will pick up when foreign traders wake up and decide to look at this one. It is a v tempting buy. I have sold out my shares bought back yesterday first tranche / wife had added which is my money anyway has a sizeable chunk at good profit / timing is everything often luck / better to have a sell target in my case half. Will buy more if it pulls back have had large losses then won them back traded a profit never gave up on this tiddler. Only have profits in play anyway.
was making a general comment re the long term not about today
The cash burn is always a problem / v volatile / ups and downs on news and placings. Just have core holding which could lose 50% add when markets are against it / people are selling / sell half when it goes bananas which it does frequently. The long term prospects here have been good for years / need to be sensible / don't be too greedy.
I am here am waiting for your many posts
