German and Polish politicians are still planning how to jointly establish battery factories in their two countries. At the same time, a larger production facility for lithium-ion batteries is being built in Poland: the Korean concern LG Chem has been building the first major cell factory on the continent in Wroclaw, Poland, a few months after Daimler had to cease cell production in Saxony. The factory will be opened in 2018 and will supply well-known carmakers in Europe.
But will it become a veritable gigafactory - a work that can compete with Tesla's giant battery factory in Nevada? Not quite, but LG invested at least 1.3 billion euros in Wroclaw. Thus, the project has grown miserably - even in the past year was a rather low three-digit million in the speech. 2500 people are to find work in the factory. Poland is the most competitive manufacturing location to serve European and international manufacturers, said LG Chem Vice President Chang-Beom Kang.
The raw materials such as lithium should first be imported from Asia. Later, they could possibly supply Polish companies.
Planned annual capacity: long-term estimated 15 gigawatt hours (GWh). That would be equivalent to batteries for 300,000 electric cars. Initially, however, the factory will produce batteries for 100,000 cars starting next year.
