Japan quake hurts GKN car operations Date: Monday 11 Apr 2011 LONDON (ShareCast) - Automotive and aerospace engineer GKN said its car operations have been impacted by the recent earthquake in Japan, though market conditions have otherwise been as expected in the first quarter. Sales were up by 14% from the same period a year ago to £1.49bn, while pre-tax profits rose by more than 50% to £107m. “Global light vehicle production increased by around 4% in the first quarter to 19.4 million vehicles, with good growth in the European premium vehicle segment and the Indian, North American and Chinese markets,” GKN said. “Production in Japan was severely impacted by the earthquake and tsunami and some disruption has also been experienced in Europe and North America as a result of component supply problems from Japan.” GKN said that Japanese manufacturers are planning to resume production in April and May “although it will be some time before the industry is in a position to catch up on production lost through the first half.” The component supply problems reported by GKN have also hurt UK operations of Japanese car manufacturers such as Nissan, which is closing down production at its Sunderland factory for three days this week due to parts shortages. “GKN has excellent new products and technologies which are aligned with our customers' desire to have smaller, lighter and stronger components and systems, offering improved efficiency, lower fuel consumption and greater environmental benefits,” said GKN chief executive Kevin Smith. “Our four divisions are well placed to achieve a period of sustainable growth and margin improvement."

Rexam to expand capacity in Brazil Date: Monday 11 Apr 2011 LONDON (ShareCast) - Consumer packaging titan Rexam is to build a new beverage can plant n northern Brazil to meet burgeoning demand in the Latin American country. The new plant, which will be located close to the city of Belém, will have a capacity of 1.2bn cans and is expected to be operational by mid-2012. Rexam's total can capacity in Brazil will increase from around 11bn at the beginning of 2011 to about 14bn by the end of 2012. The building of the new plant will allow Rexam to optimise logistics. The north and north east of Brazil have about a third of the country's population and are the fastest growing regions in the country. Around a third of new investments by Rexam's Brazilian customers are concentrated to these regions, the company said. --- jh

Evaluation Shares in Interior Services Group look good value for a number of reasons. On consensus forecasts for around 30p of earnings in 2010 they trade on a forward multiple of just 6.7 times, a rating which is a significant discount to peers in the wider construction industry. What’s more, net cash as at 31st December 2010 represents 56% of the current market captalisation. In addition, the shares yield a historic 7.17%, which should be nearer 7.6% for the full 2010/11 year. At around 2% the spread is low for an AIM-listed stock and liquidity is reasonably good too. Rexam to build new beverage can plant in northern Brazil Rexam PLC, the global consumer packaging company, announces that it is to increase its beverage can making capacity to meet the continued growth of the Brazilian market. The new plant, which will be located close to the city of Belém in the north of the country, will have a capacity of 1.2bn cans and is expected to be operational by mid 2012. Rexam's total can capacity in Brazil will increase from c. 11bn at the beginning of 2011 to c.14bn by the end of 2012. At the start of 2011, Rexam announced that it had signed a long term contract with its largest customer in Brazil which underpins returns on current and future capital investment plans. The new plant is included in these plans. The building of the new plant will allow Rexam to meet growing customer demand in the coming years and to optimise logistics. International growth boosts Michael Page Date: Monday 11 Apr 2011 LONDON (ShareCast) - Soaring international revenues helped recruitment group Michael Page post a sharp rise in profits in the first quarter, though growth was more subdued in the UK amid continuing difficult economic conditions. Total gross profit was up by 30% from the same period the previous year at £127.3m. Gross profits in the Europe, Middle East and Africa division, which accounts for nearly half of earnings were up by 26.1%, with all main markets seeing strong growth. UK profits, which make up a quarter of earnings, climbed by 9.4%. Market conditions remained tough, with a slow but steady improvement in the private sector, held back by a difficult public sector, the company said. The Asia Pacific and Americas divisions both saw profits rise by more than 60%. “We have now had four quarters of broadly similar gross profit growth, at constant currency and we expect tougher comparative periods to affect growth rates going forward,” the company said. “However, the outlook in Asia and Latin America remains positive, and Europe continues to improve, all of which gives us confidence that we are well positioned to exceed our 2010 profit performance.” Michael Page’s peers Hays and Robert Walters updated on first quarter trading last week. Both companies also reported strong growth outside the UK.
