UKRAINIAN EXPLORATION WELL SUCCESS JKX is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed and tested exploration well Z-04 in the Zaplavskoye exploration licence in Poltava, Ukraine. On completion of a 36-hour multi-choke test, well Z-04 flowed at a rate of 20.8 MMcfd of gas and 1,040 bpd of condensate though a 41/64" choke with a flowing wellhead pressure of 2,684 psi. The well has been tied back to the main Novo-Nikolaevskoye complex processing facility with a 9km flow line and placed on production. Well Z-04 was drilled to a total depth of 2,937m and penetrated over 20m of Visean sandstones. Drilling and completion of the well took 31 days. Well Z-04 is located to the northwest of the Novo-Nikolaevskoye group of fields within the recently acquired 41.9 sq km extension of the existing Zaplavskoye exploration licence. The Zaplavskoye exploration licence now comprises a total area of 197.5 sq km.

In the three years to 31st December 2011, SEC was the strongest performer in its AIC UK Smaller Company sector peer group, outperforming the benchmark by 76.6%. A historically high SVG free cash flow yield of 16.3% and strong news flows from a number of individual holdings bode well for potential NAV growth as economic recovery continues. In our Initiation of Coverage we highlighted the Dunedin Smaller Companies Investment Trust (Dunedin) as a comparator for SEC. Dunedin's most recent NAV, at 28th February 2012, stood at 154.06p, and the current share price stands at 140.125p, indicating a discount to NAV of just 9.05% (Sources: www.trustnet.com). SEC is currently trading at a 14.78% discount. Although SEC's discount has decreased by circa 4.1 percentage points since our initiation note, we would expect to see a closer parity between share price and NAV as the investment story becomes better understood and if equity markets continue to recover. Indeed, in the six months to 31st December 2011 the smallest NAV discount observed stood at 9.00%. With the shares trading at 87.00p and a NAV per share of 102.09p (unaudited at 24th February 2012), we retain our stance of buy.

Last rated by Growth Company Investor at 191p, the shares currently trade at 172.5p. A group determined to build on its acquisitions, its niche offering holds considerable growth prospects. Despite the hefty rating the shares remain a long-term buy.

BBA Aviation, the aviation support firm, has boasted a significant rise in both revenue and profit for the year ended December 31st. Statutory profit before tax was up 24% from $132m to $163.6m (up 15% to £170.2m before exceptional items), while revenue was up 17% from $1,833.7m to $2,136.7m. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose 13% from $221m to $250.1m, while basic underlying earnings per share gained 6% from 27.3c to 29c, after the firm continued to outperform the market, albeit at a slower rate than expected. Division-wise, Aftermarket Services & Systems (AS&S) profit was up 23%, while Flight Support was up 10%. AS&S had a very strong year with revenue growing by 18% to $806.6m (2010: $684.2m) of which 12% was organic. The balance of the increase was accounted for by the acquisition of the GE Aviation Systems' fuel measurement business.

Commenting on the award Peter Rogers, Chief Executive of Babcock said: "We are delighted to have won this contract with our partners UGL. Babcock International (BAB) announced that it is the preferred bidder for a five year Australian Navy contract, worth 300 million Australian dollars (203.7 million pounds). The deal is to provide support services the the navy's eight Anaz class ships and is expected to be signed in June 2012, with operations to commence on 1st January 2013. The engineering support firm added that it will also bid for the Amphibious and Afloat Support Ships' maintenance contract which should be release by mid 2013. The shares lost 11.5p to 745p.

Electronics and technology developer Laird (LRD) saw underlying pre-tax profits jump by 31% to 52.7 million pounds for the year ended 31st December, benefiting from better than expected performances from its acquisitions of Cattron and Kluver. The group, which is a supplier of components to Apple, also saw strong demand for tablets and smartphones, which offer higher gross margins. Laird shares climbed 6.8p to 179.3p.
