Anglo American (AAL), the multinational mining company, and Lafarge, the world's biggest cement company, are to create a UK construction materials business that would have annual sales of 1.8 billion pounds. Anglo, which owns Tarmac in the UK, outlined a plan for a 50-50 joint venture that would combine all concrete, cement, asphalt, and contracting businesses of Tarmac UK and Lafarge UK. Separately, the miner posted a pre-tax profit of 10.9 billion dollars (6.7 billion pounds) in the year ended 31st December 2010, up from 4 billion dollars (2.5 billion pounds) a year earlier, on revenue ahead 30.4% at 27 billion dollars (17 billion pounds). Anglo shares slipped 86.7p to 3,208.8p.
