The former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has warned that current tension between Russia and the West is putting the world in "colossal danger" due to the threat from nuclear weapons.

In an interview with the BBC's Steve Rosenberg, former President Gorbachev called for all countries to declare that nuclear weapons should be destroyed.

I also like the ordinary average Russian people, they aren't to blame for attacking Ukraine, they don't want war any more than most ordinary people the world over, unfortunately they aren't being told the truth by their state media because it is controlled by a corrupt and oppressive dictator Putin who has surrounded himself with cronies and yes men (oligarchs) who have done a Judas Iscariot on honesty, integrity and decency in return for being made obscenely rich as front men for businesses that Putin has ultimate control over!
I have great admiration for the Ukrainian people and their president, I must admit I would have never believed that they could put up such fight, but then they are fighting for the freedom of their country against a corrupt dictator and oppressor Putin who has never ever been elected fairly!
When Mr. Zelensky debated Ukraine’s incumbent president Petro Poroshenko, he was accused of being an “unworthy opponent.” He fired back: “I am not your opponent! I am your verdict!” Strong line, with an element of truth in it, too. Plus, it probably sounds funnier in Ukrainian!
The idea of comedian leaders might not be as laughable as some might might think.
After all, the phrase "Is funny because it’s true! "
Every successful comedian has an element of truth in their comedy.,
when Icelandic comedian Jon Gnarr ran for mayor of Reykjavik in 2010 and created his own party, The Best Party, it began as a joke until the people realized that a new party might in fact be the best option, and Mr. Gnarr’s sincerity and honesty – unprecedented qualities in politics – were rewarded with the mayor’s seat in Iceland’s biggest (only?) city from 2010 to 2014.!
Jon Gnarr oversaw serious matters such as a major restructuring of banks and public-sector cutbacks during his time in office!
I would certainly prefer a comedian as UK prime minister in preference to Boris Johnson who led a Brexit campaign based on lies and was also elected on a manifesto of more even more lies and now has presided over one of the one of the most corrupt and undemocratic administrations in UK history.
Mr. Zelensky is certainly no clown or puppet and has the support of his electorate,in compariosoin Johnson is an evil Joker who lacks integrity and is increasingly despised by the electorate and certainly regarded as clown on the world stage!
Eddie Izard, Bill Ballie and Ricky Gervais would all make excellent politicians, even prime ministers!

Dear Caroline,
I may be raising an issue of great concern that you and your colleagues of the All Party Climate Change Group are already aware of, but as frustrated about as I am!
The Cop 26 cost a huge amount of public money yet it seems to have been little more than expensive "Jolly" for the worlds political elite and pro fossil fuel lobbyist which has achieved very little if anything other than kicking the can down the road for a bit longer!
That said, and in view of the present unprecedented huge increase in energy prices and its detrimental effect on the cost of living I write to bring to your attention the worldwide continued pollution of our planets atmosphere by the unnecessary oil rig flaring of a very precious natural resource "Gas".
Our present government is failing to tackle an obvious ongoing unnecessary pollution of our planet by the wasting (Flaring) of a precious natural resource!
Worldwide 4% of natural gas is flared annually , that is enough to supply the UK & Germany for a year!
The estimated cost of wasted natural gas of $30 billion in the BBC saving the Planet broadcast was prior to the huge increases in wholesale spot prices so the wastage now may well be $50- $ 60 billion or even more!
If the environment damage caused by this gas flaring were not bad enough to bring about some sense of urgency amongst our political leaders to bring in legislation to compel Oil/Energy producers to start saving this valuable natural resource, then surely the present Ukraine crisis and the huge increase in energy prices has now made it imperative to take some immediate action to stop oil rig gas flaring and instead to capture the natural gas?

There are thought to be over 10,000 gas flares around the world that contribute to global warming by emitting tonnes of carbon dioxide and methane. Flared gas is a by-product of oil extraction and is frequently used as a method of eliminating unwanted gasses in countries such as Albania, Algeria, Libya, Iraq, Russia and Nigeria. Yet, year after year deadlines set to stop the practice are missed. The oil industry says better infrastructure is needed to stop flaring and some of the world’s largest producers of oil have committed to ending flaring by 2030. What will it take for that to happen? As the war in Ukraine goes on way longer than Vladimir Putin appears to have anticipated, the Russian leader is getting increasingly aggressive. Moscow has cut off key gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, threatening to do the same for other "unfriendly nations" that refuse to pay for fuel in rubles. Putin also issued one of his strongest warnings to date over the West's "interference in Ukraine," as the U.S. and its allies ramp up weapons transfers, war financing and intelligence sharing.

Why Poland and Bulgaria? While there have been other countries that have insisted on paying for gas in euros (under existing contracts), the two nations represent the weakest spots on the east that are the first to get gas as it transits into Europe. The countries also happened to be among the first whose payments were due the soonest, though the strategy may also aim at dividing the European Union by targeting some nations and not others. Poland has additionally been one of the most critical nations of Russia in the Western alliance and has been one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine in terms of refugee intake, military support and weapons transfers.

At issue: The Kremlin has outlined a payment mechanism that would allow foreign buyers to convert their dollars and euros via Gazprombank, an entity that has been carefully excluded from EU sanctions. The state-controlled bank would send along rubles to energy giant Gazprom (OTCPK:OGZPY), which would prevent Western governments from "seizing payments made in foreign currency and strengthen Russia's sovereignty," according to Vladimir Putin. The EU has debated whether the scheme breaches sanctions against Moscow as some countries make arrangements to comply with the new payment system out of fear that an embargo or blockade could tip them into recession.

"Gazprom's announcement is another attempt by Russia to blackmail us with gas," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement. Efforts are now accelerating to replace Russian energy with new sources, like LNG imported from the U.S. and the Middle East, gas piped in from Norway and North Africa, or an upcoming pipeline from Azerbaijan. In the meantime, solidarity agreements can be signed with other EU nations for any spare gas supplies they may have, sending gas to Poland and Bulgaria via reverse flows along the Yamal-Europe pipeline or importing gas from Greece and Turkey. Dutch TTF natural gas futures, a European benchmark, rose 4.1% on Wednesday to settle at €107.43, which is well below its peak in March, but still 5x more expensive than prices a year ago.

Thought bubble: Cutting off energy to Europe is the biggest economic weapon that Putin can deploy as the Kremlin hopes to get Western nations to think twice before helping Ukraine.
