The charismatic former UKIP leader was mocked last week for having “bottled it” by keeping his head below the parapet.

But in an “emergency” announcement - for which he made Britain wait six hours - Mr Farage confirmed he will contest the Clacton constituency.

Pollsters have already warned his populist Reform UK will deprive the Conservatives of majorities in tens of seats across the country.

The return of Mr Farage could set the stage for a Canada ‘93 style wipeout, after which he has said he wants to launch a “takeover” of the party he quit three decades ago.

David Cameron offered up the Brexit referendum to undermine UKIP in the 2015 general election. The vote emboldened Mr Farage, and Conservative Party has been in turmoil ever since. Now Mr Farage appears to be coming back to finish them off.

The UK stats watchdog is looking into a claim reiterated by Rishi Sunak on the TV debate last night, where he said Labour would put up taxes by £2,100 if they won, citing Treasury civil servants as the source.

Not true, said Labour, citing a letter from James Bowler, the Treasury’s top man, that the numbers were not produced by the Civil Service but were a Conservative party document.

Bowler wrote to shadow Treasury chief secretary Darren Jones to say that the figures used by Sunak "include costs beyond those provided by the civil service and published online by HM Treasury".
