Biden admin suggests ban on Chinese software in vehicles in US23 Sep 2024 16:59
The United States Department of Commerce recommended on Monday that Chinese software and hardware be banned from vehicles driving inside the country, citing security concerns as the reason behind such a suggestion.
"When foreign adversaries build software to make a vehicle that means it can be used for surveillance, can be remotely controlled, which threatens the privacy and safety of Americans on the road," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo remarked at a briefing.
Given all the technology the cars are connected to nowadays, it isn't difficult to see how the country's adversaries could utilize this, Raimondo warned, adding that in "extreme situations," all the vehicles could be shut down or taken control of. While China was at the center of the potential regulation, Russia was also mentioned.
