Russia is set to sign a trade agreement with Kenya in an effort to boost cooperation with the region ahead of the Russia-Africa summit scheduled for the end of July in St. Petersburg.

The trade deal comes amid an official visit of Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and is part of Moscow's plans to increase ties with the rest of the globe amid frosty relations with the West following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

Both Russian and Ukrainian officials visited countries across the region over the past year. Lavrov previously visited Africa at least three times since the start of 2023, and is expected to participate in the BRICS summit set for June 1 in South Africa's capital Cape Town.
