BP plans to produce first Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli deep gas at end-202524 Jan 2025 13:48
BAKU. Jan 24 (Interfax) - BP plans to begin production of the first deep gas from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) offshore Azerbaijan block later this year, Tamam Bayatli, chief spokesperson for BP in Azerbaijan, told reporters on Friday.
"Drilling of the first production well, which began from the Western Chirag platform last year, is ongoing. The completion of drilling is expected in the second or third quarter of this year. However, even after drilling is completed, the well will not be immediately put into operation, as it will require work to connect it to the existing infrastructure that ensures the transportation of gas to the shore," she said.
This will involve the installation of a significant amount of equipment on the platform, which will take some time," Byatli said.
"So the first deep gas can probably be expected by the end of 2025," she said.
BP's regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, Gary Jones said in June last year that the company expected to obtain the first deep gas from ACG at the start of 2025.
The shareholders of the project to develop the ACG block signed a second addendum to the September 14, 2017 production-sharing agreement on September 20 last year. Under the addendum, the companies will move ahead with the exploration, appraisal, development and production of non-associated gas at the block.
The addendum is effective until the end of the existing PSA in 2049. The participating interests of the parties in the deep gas project are the same as in the existing PSA.
ACG's non-associated gas resources are believed to be up to 4 trillion cubic feet or around 112 billion cubic meters in place.
Production will initially total about 0.5 bcm per year. Gas from the first well will be sold to SOCAR.
The contract for the development of the Azeri, Chirag and Deepwater Gunashli fields was signed on September 20, 1994 and expired in 2024. However, in September 2017, a new contract for the development of the ACG block to 2049 was signed.
BP has a 30.37% stake in the project and SOCAR holds 31.655%. The other parties are Hungary's MOL with 9.57%, ExxonMobil with 6.79%, ONGC Videsh with 2.925%, Japan's Inpex and Itochu with 9.31% and 3.65%, respectively and Turkey's TPAO with 5.73%.
