Royal Mail has been struggling as it moves from its traditional business of delivering letters - which is no longer profitable - to the fast-growing world of parcel deliveries.

The company faces fierce competition from courier companies and is losing around a million pounds a day. It said the strikes have added £100m to its losses, and has announced plans to cut up to 10,000 jobs.

As well as improving its offer to workers, Royal Mail says it has promised more generous redundancy terms and a profit-sharing scheme.

Earlier this month, it asked the government to allow it to stop letter deliveries on Saturdays as it reported a sharp loss for the first half of the year.

It wants to move from a six-days-a-week letter delivery to five, from Monday to Friday only. However, parcel services would continue to run all days of the week.

Who is being reasonable?

Thanks for mansplaining and calling me darling - you fit the stereotpye well. I think you will find it is the business that creates the profits by employing and remunerating employees under contract.

Egged on by unions, the memebers believe they can take take take as they have a right don't they. The Union rep told them so.

IIRC the employees got a share allocation of 10%, free shares at the flotation. FWIW I give my postie a Christmas box and a tip as he is excellent and friendly and I do support the workers to an extent.

When they risk their jobs and business (in decline for various reasons) then common sense should prevail.

The service used to be twice a day a few years back to once a day.

Now we seem to get the weeks post on 1 or 2 days and to be honest if it was delivered on a Monday & a Thursday then most would not notice (except on birthdays etc.

Perhaps that is the way to go, a 2 day service.

Look at the rail strikes and the chaos they are causing. Train drivers on 60k+ disrupting the lives of others - all for the love of money and greed.

Don't stand in the way of progress.

I assume you are invested here rather than just griping on the board.

If they do not change their ways they will all be out of work. Payrises cannot be given without reform. It is the old carrot and stick on the go since the 60s.

New starts on less pay - used to be called apprenticeships to learn the ropes. At home here we got some non UK posties aound 2010 and they outshone the workshy old school who retired or perked up their ideas.

Like the nurses, doctors, police and railworkers the postmen has a favourable, almost nostalgic regard with the general public. They can do not wrong.

MOst do the right thing and are paid handsomely. If all the red tape wokery disappeared overnight and the services were left to provide, well a service with the good old standards of professionalism then everyone would be satisfied.

Greed and unions and politics to ensnare us with Starmer seems to be the goal.

The employees are but pawns who will be shafted royally down the line.

No work no pay (other than a subsistence wage). £35k average - carers would be happy with 50% of that and they work so much harder.

as for Royal Mail - sell the silverware, slim the company and return the proceeds to the owners, the shareholders.

Seems to be talking a lot of sense to me - incentivising staff by warning them to up their game and letting them know that some certain businesses are on the block. This will reduce the dead wood and improve the bottom line. The markets will grow to love it.
