The whole report actually makes interesting reading and it discusses datacentres and whereas Ireland is very much a leading location the report stresses that without security of supply the additions of new datacentres will be limited.

Worth reading the whole report which can be found at and clearly points out that wind and sun do not give Ireland the security it needs to secure long term stability of the electricity requirements and added to that the electrical infrastructure in the country leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't know about you but it hasn't been too windy lately. Will be interesting to see the monthly figures when they are published in early April. We used to hear about "March Winds" but they seem to have disappeared.

Healy Rae says farmers spending €650 a week on agricultural diesel if they can get it. Added to that are all the extra costs of fertilizer and fodder so how long before they are up in arms and gunning for Ryan and more so the public when the price of food goes through the roof?

"On the same issue, with the massive increase in the cost of fertiliser, agricultural contractors are facing an awful dilemma. At this point, the only support the Government has provided to the farmers and fishermen of Ireland is 2 cent by way of the rebate scheme that was announced. Any day of the week one now has to put €650 worth of agricultural diesel into a tractor that will be mowing or going hard all day. It is impossible for these contractors to say that they are going to be able to provide a service to the farmers - their customers - this year. It is a matter of absolute urgency that the Government looks at this. We need our farmers to produce. First, we need them to be able to have silage and, second, hay has to be grown and saved for us to have our food produce. We desperately need the Government to support the fact that agricultural diesel is so expensive now."

Fine Fail and Fine Gael are happy to let Ryan be their snarling dog at the door to frighten off the public while they hide inside out of the way.

Interesting debate in the Dail yesterday when "farming's" little bite-your-legs, Michael Healy Rae, TD from Kerry, who represents the farmers had a go at Leo Varadkar and "upset" him when he said he was "away with the fairies" given that Varadkar is a homosexual .

The debate was over the refusal of the permission to build an LNG terminal in Shannon.

All over the papers today as Healy Rae defended himself and refused to take it back. You can be sure he intended to use it exactly for the purpose it did but it really got under Varadkar's skin.

According to him we will have 7 wind farms producing 5gb of electricity within five years but it will take only 4 but not even the auction or the planning has started.

Providence has a four year license on Barryroe and in December of this year a government takes place where Varadkar (unless he is indicted for his indiscretion with his friend) will take over as Taoiseach and Fine Gael will be the lead party in power . This will result with a change of ministers. I am sure Ryan will want to hold on to his current one but if the proverbial hits the fan in the meantime he might well be replaced, hopefully.

So, since Providence always specified that they wanted to drill an appraisal next year, with oil and gas by 2026, that will still be within the parameters they set unless they go back to the original plan and drill like mad for oil rather than looking for more gas which is what I presume they want to do by drilling the appraisal. And, that by the way, will not need a license for the appraisal well as it will be for the birds.

I watched BBC's Hard Talk this morning which was on the EU's stupidity when it comes to oil and gas and its 60% dependency on Russia which it has keep and will for perhaps seven years be beholden to Russia as it takes them that long to transition away, if they ever can.

The gist of the program was:

What a non-entity she was. An Estonian, once under Russian rule herself, all she could do was waffle. Sacker gave her a "hard" time as he pointed out that Putin had Germany in his pocket as it would not allow Swift to be sanctioned because Germany uses Swift to pay its billions of euros per month to Putin for his gas and oil and that money was being used to fund the war. And Germany says it will be weaned off Russian fossil fuels in seven years.

Simson also said Van Der Laden is scurrying around the world trying to find alternative sources of oil and gas. I wonder did she approach Ryan?

One place mentioned was Saudi Arabia, as Sacker said, one dictator to another who just executed about 70 people last weekend in one fell swoop.

A final point, if Ireland thinks England is going to play big brother when Russian oil and gas are switched off and they too are left short, which could happen very fast if Putin got it in his head to do it, do you think they are going to deprive themselves of oil and gas and just send it willy-nilly on to Ireland? It took us 800 years to get rid of them Do we want them back?

And as for Norway pumping more oil and gas, I also listened to The Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Store, on a previous episode and he said "hat war in Ukraine would not end if European countries stopped buying Russian oil and gas." and he also said Norway is pumping at capacity and will not be able to supply any more that it does at the moment so that is a bit of a "stopper" for Ireland as the gas coming from Moffatt is made up of Russian and Norwegian oil.

Poor Eamon. Not the flavour of the month according to this report.

Diesel is of essence to farmers who use it to run their farm machinery so if it is rationed in England then surely none will come to Ireland. Not only that, but 67.8% of all cars in Ireland are diesel.

Not only that, but 70,000 homes in Ireland still use coal and they are usually the poorer members of society or those living in older houses. As of Monday, a bag of coal will cost €27 which is an increase of €11 in the last eight months.

There is a lot to be said for self-sufficiency.

Obviously for a share like Providence small amounts make a significant difference but yesterday on ISEQ it went up by 31%, the highest rate on the exchange by a long mile.

Friday changes are often defenses against weekend statements in the papers when brokers cannot react so they often put in defense positions on a Friday by artificially raising the price but the next best mover was 9.27%

I presume Moneypoint is crying out for loads of coal now that oil and gas have gone through the roof.

But since most Moneypoint coal to date has been Russian they will need to find another source as they have decided to stop using Russian coal.

Corrib gas has had a bonanza with the price increases but production is shrinking fast. As the following says:

"The gas produced from Corrib represents 100 per cent of Ireland’s domestic production of natural gas.

Vermilion state that production volumes reached full plant capacity at the end of 2016 “and production plateaued at this level until decline started at the beginning of 2018”.

So it has been declining since 2018 which probably means it is going to run out totally before the expected date of 2029.

Obviously parallels with Kinsale which was thought to have a far longer life span than it did except they found there was far less gas there than they expected.

Statement from Boris Johnson this morning:

"The Prime Minister said sanctions are working but the only way to have “real lasting pressure” on Vladimir Putin is by turning to other nations for energy supplies. He said there are huge reserves around the world that mean “we do not have to be beholden to Putin in the way that we are”. The UK wants to bring together nations to find other gas sources".

England has already sanctioned 6 new oil wells in the North Sea. Not only that but the UK Government is going to fund the development when he said "a plan by the Treasury to fund greater North Sea oil and gas production aims to offset the fall in supply."

Are we going to hope they give us the clippings of tin (oil and gas)? Perhaps they will give some to Northern Ireland but we can go sing for it if the British are anything to go by.

Note: "The UK wants to bring together nations to find other gas sources". If Ryan thinks England is going to hand Ireland oil and gas willy-nilly while it does nothing he has another think coming.

I can see England shutting down the interconnectors to Ireland if there is no quid-pro-quo.

Perhaps those other two wets, Martin and Varakar, could get off their butts and put Ryan in his place instead of hiding behind him. If the UK is going to fund the development of oil and gas fields how come our "wets" sit and hope they are going to bail us out?
