Methinks it's best to buy new shares now rather than auto reinvest in mid-Aug when the sp is likely to rise to coincide with reinvestment day.

Am I right in observing that the spread has narrowed? I haven't been tracking this since being hit by the devaluation...

Compass - if you are 50% correct that's a good result. I am always 0% correct. Quite a remarkable feat after years of trading I even though I do say so myself.

The key issue is that the Northern countries have no appetite for bailing out mis-aligned/mis-managed southern economies with their taxpayers' money - hence the illogical stupidity of the whole Euro project. Now are there any takers for my offer and at what point do I buy more Vodafone shares......????

Further to my earlier comment, we seem to be in quite a narrow range now i.e. a smaller oscillation than a year ago. Sorry everyone but it's probably all my fault for attempting a swing trading strategy. It seems to me that Italy could be a catalyst for a lower sp as the market loves a crisis and I don't see any catalysts for a higher sp at least until the August statement.

Well the sp is up today. Perverse or what? I was thinking about selling my holding which will of course drive the sp up further. I'm thinking that all I need to do then is to collect 1� from everyone who will benefit from my action and I'll be minted. However, like some quantum effect, the market will somehow 'know' about this stratagem and wrong foot me by actually going lower instead. Hah - then I can buy back in lower! Essentially, no-one can have a clue where the sp will be in any given timescale....

Whatever price one buys at - it will go lower. Whatever assumptions one makes - the market will wrong-foot one. However, LLoy just oscillates up and down and so I agree that buying the dips seems sensible.

There's a far simpler explanation to the sp fall :- I have bought some. So sorry everyone :-(

I too held off in case there was a sp crash. Interesting that broker targets are well above current levels and estimates are for increasing profits and div but VOD doesn't seem to be one of the constituents in popular funds.

At least I seem to have stopped the decline for you all by selling.

As an amateur, I sold out to avoid being completely wiped out, even though every time I've done so in the past it causes the sp to recover unexpectedly. So if past form is anything to go by holders should now be ok.

Other than history there seems to be absolutely no basis on which to judge whether it's worth buying or selling now. Absolutely opaque in terms of trying to understand the fundamentals and the ROI on its massive investments including the likes of a network on the moon. It is notable that the well known funds don't include Vod. Having said that I've kicked myself time and time again for not catching these bottoms. sp recovery is as fast as the decines. Always fearing this time it might be different and it won't recover.

Mulder - are you saying that Angelici is buying to try and hold off bids?

Buying opportunity now or poo trap? Historically it always come back from these lows...

There's also this thing knocking around about dividend cuts.

OK the � has dropped back in recent months against the $ but it seems many of the defensives like GSK, IMB, BATS, VOD, NG are being decimated. I wonder if it's all down to the 'bond proxy' noise i.e it's all about the dividend and the sp doesn't matter any more since there's little room for growth - only a growing debt pile, with many of them.

7 out of 7 cats prefer it. I just wonder if there's any chance that brokers mostly advise buys on stocks and daft target prices 'cos that's how they make money? no - silly me - can't be a correlation there

Look at the 5 yr chart. It goes up and down 'reliably'. If the past is anything to go by(and 5 yrs is fairly good data set) it is a buy about now. The sp on a number of stocks tends to rise to meet the div pay date so that we mugs who reinvest pay more. Better to accumulate divis and buy chunks on dips. Innit.
