I still think that this is part of a longer term strategy to be in with a chance of the CalMac replacement work - whoever gets that needs ferry experience. I also think he may be spotted flying over the Isle of Wight like the caped crusader as they need new craft too.

There's a game of musical chairs and shuffle board going on at HQ as they position themselves for the next stage of the cunning plan. The chat over the weekend about a new GM at Appledore was correct -- Tom Hart has a new role as they prepare for FSS. One day JW may tell us what's going on - or not! 🐖 🐷 🐽
My reading of it is that it's not over yet......but that whilst the gov is aware of the nature of the problem, and is sympathetic, it would be hard to justify giving levelling up funding if the steamship company signs the contracts with Piriou. The government is however still looking at it with the local authority. I don't think JW will have been appreciative!
Just spotted this letter from Michael Gove to the Chairman of IOS Council regarding levelling up:

Strategically this makes some good sense - there is a pipeline of potential work in Scotland as the elderly ferries come up for renewal. The islanders up there want a better service and the government wants a more efficient build with less delays. Whoever gets the work will need proven recent experience of ferry services and ferries. With the maritime support company Harland bought recently in Penzance and the Austral tie up they are getting their ducks in a very nice row to be able to tender a serious bid when the time comes.
Early on there's a statement that the council has received a petition signed by over 1200 islanders protesting at the steamship company's decision to take private funding and raise prices. The council have noted this and will debate it at a further meeting but the chair stated that the petitioners' views matched his own.
I finished listening after about 10 minutes so over to the next person with some time to spare......
The AUKAS agreement for submarines was a major indication of Australia, the UK and the USA working together to share the strategic development and manufacture of products for the defence industry. BAE are major players in this and the knowledge transfer in this proposed deal for Harland is strategically important. Great work!
I have posted the following comment on Janice's article on Times Live :
Wrong Janice, factually so wrong! The contract was not awarded to Spain! It was awarded to a consortium that includes Harland & Wolff as well as Navantia and the iconic Belfast shipyard is already gearing up for this with new infrastructure and new staffing - hundreds of apprenticeships have been created. Much of the fabrication work will be done in Belfast by UK citizens. On this occasion you've been spoonfed half a story. Ms Eagle recently visited the yard in Belfast and knows the truth.
