The Whirlwind was really very good in it's day - see the Wikipedia article, but in short "From the flying viewpoint, the Whirlwind was considered magnificent" - Circumstance and a change of engine priorities led to it's demise (economics really), so all in all a good choice and fitting in a way because it's a little known success in it's own way.
As for the Lincoln, it was initially just an extension of the Lancaster, sufficiently different to warrant a new name (clear lineage though), originally for Tiger Force in the far east in WW2 then the Malaya insurgency and yes eventually to the Shackleton (10,000 rivets flying in close formation).
For what it's worth, I also think the deal from earlier in the week is a very good one, one would image that there is substantial due diligence involved there and it advances things along nicely.
