SINGER UPGRADES JD SPORTS TO 'BUY' AHEAD OF INTERIMS Singer advised investors to buy shares in sportswear retailer JD Sports Fashion (LON:JD.) ahead of its interim results, which will be out on September 18. The broker is forecasting pre-tax profits of £2.4 million, down from £16 million a year earlier mostly as a result of expected losses at the Blacks Leisure business following the acquisition at the start of the year. Analyst Mark Photiades said he has confidence in the management’s ability to restore profitability following a visit to its newly refitted St Paul’s store, which he said showed encouraging improvements. This is the first refit by the company since acquiring Blacks out of administration with a further seven refits before Christmas. “Having visited the store many times in the past we were struck by the fact that the new fit-out made the store finally feel like a specialist outdoor proposition and that retail disciplines in areas such as visual merchandising had improved significantly,” said Photiades. “New merchandising techniques for key product categories such as footwear, waterproofs, sleeping bags and rucksacks are seeing positive uplifts and, although still early days, management see a big opportunity to improve sales densities.” He added that alongside the turnaround potential at Blacks, he also sees international expansion of the core business as a key driver of the investment case. INTERCONTINENTAL TO OPEN DUBAI MARINA HOTEL IN 2013 InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the world's largest hotelier by number of rooms, has signed an agreement with Dubai-based developer Select Group to open the InterContinental Dubai Marina, the firm said Sunday. The hotel, which will form part of the Bay Central development in the Marina, is scheduled to open at the end of 2013, the group said. The property will include 132-hotel rooms as well as 196-studio, one, two, three and four-bedroom residential apartments. The UK-based hotelier in May said it planned to hire between 10,000 and 15,000 staff in the Middle East as it ramps up its expansion plans in the region. The firm, which operates five brands - InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Steybridge Suites – plans to open 40 new regional properties in the next three to five years, six of which will be in the UAE, said Pascal Gauvin, COO for InterContinental Hotels Group India, Middle East and Africa. “We have 40 hotels in the pipeline in the Middle East and Africa. HUNTSWORTH: NUMIS EXPECTS CONTINUED REVENUE STABILITY IN SECOND HALF Communications and PR firm Huntsworth (LON:HNT) is rated a 'buy' by broker Numis, which says the shares offer "robust medium-term value". The firm reported interim results last month, which were ahead of the broker's expectations, said analyst Paul Richards. In the six months to June 30, the firm posted pre-tax profits of £11.6million - an increase of 20.8 per cent. Revenues were virtually unchanged at £88.2 million. The group's chief executive Peter Chadlington had told investors: "This is a result of our rigorous cost control combined with the changing profile of the group's revenue stream gathering pace with global and multi-office revenues growing strongly in the period and now accounting for almost half of group revenues." Analyst Richards said in a note today: "We expect continued revenue stability in H2, though quarterly performance will reflect vastly different comparatives, and expect the group to focus on profit delivery and cash generation. "Looking forwards into 2013, we believe that revenue growth will accelerate, with continued growth in multi-office revenues and less of a drag from single office revenues as attrition moderates." The analyst added the group was well placed to benefit from its burgeoning operations in the Middle East and strong digital offering. "We are maintaining our estimates for full year 2012 and 2013 and believe the shares offer robust medium-term value." Numis has a target price for the stock of 61p. HARGREAVES LANSDOWN PROSPERS IN TOUGH TIMES UK retail broker takes advantage of technology It was founded in the tough economic times of the early 1980s. More than 30 years later, Hargreaves Lansdown is still showing it can grow and flourish against a difficult financial backdrop. The UK retail investment broker, which was launched in a small bedroom in Bristol in July 1981, reported record earnings and assets under management in the year to June and increased its dividend by a fifth as it defied the troubles of the economy. Offering retail investors shares through its web-based platform, it has shown an ability to change with the times, taking advantage of technology and an increasing appetite among consumers to do their own research when buying stocks. The company, which is listed on the FTSE 100 and still based in Bristol, has also succeeded where rivals are struggling. Ken McAtamney, senior portfolio manager at William Blair, a top-40 shareholder, says: “This is a long-term organic growth story with a very strong management team. LUCKY 7 FOR HARGREAVES LANSDOWN Despite a 7% fall in the FTSE All Share index in the year to June, UK-listed financial adviser Hargreaves Lansdown has lifted its assets under administration by 7% to £26.3bn, following the latest in a series of recession-denying performances. The surge is thanks to Hargreaves’ success in attracting affluent clients to its internet-driven investment platform. An increasing number of individuals are using it for their personal pensions, now that the scale of final salary provision is falling. Clients like the way in which the firm offers the opportunity to invest in a broad range of funds and executes orders smoothly. Its client retention rate last year was 94.4%, with participants on its investment platform rising 45,000 to 425,000. According to chief executive Ian Gorham: “Our mission is to retain our position as the best place in the UK to buy investments.” Hargreaves has negotiated tough terms with managers desperate to appear on its platform. Over the year, its pre-tax profits rose 21% to £152.8m. Just five years ago, Hargreaves’ profits were £24.4m. In each year of the credit crisis they continued to rise, as it took market share away from other fund distributors including banks and independent financial advisers. ACQUISITION OF INTERNATIONAL CUISINE LIMITED (ICL) IS POSITIVE FOR GREENCORE GROUP Chilled food manufacturer Greencore’s acquisition of International Cuisine Limited (ICL) is positive for the group and for the wider convenience food market, according to City analysts. ICL is an own-label chilled ready meals business based in Consett, County Durham with a turnover of £45M. Most of its sales are to existing Greencore customers, said Greencore. Clive Black, analyst at Shore Capital, told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “ICL fits in pretty well with Greencore’s existing business. The deal gives it increased capacity in prepared foods at an affordable price. “Its existing prepared foods facilities were pretty fully utilised, so the extra capacity will be useful. GKN BENEFITS FROM RE-RATING COMMENTS GKN hit its highest since March this month after JPMorgan Cazenove, its joint house broker, saw scope for a re-rating. The engineer’s purchase last month of Volvo’s aero engine business for £633m means aerospace will provide about 40 per cent of group profits next year, JPMorgan said. “GKN is widely regarded as an auto components business,” said the broker. “Typically, aerospace companies trade on significantly higher valuation multiples than auto-related companies.” Yet GKN was being valued at just 6.8 times 2013 earnings and 0.6 times sales, making it among the cheapest stocks in the sector, JPMorgan told clients. “We believe current valuation of the group fails to fairly reflect the marked improvement in profitability or the richer business mix as a result of the acquisition of Volvo Aero.” JPMorgan put a 255p target on GKN shares. Questor says "BUY" QUESTOR SHARE TIP: GKN OPERTATES IN GROWTH MARKETS First-half numbers from specialist engineer GKN beat market expectations, with pre-tax profits leaping 43pc. Nigel Stein, chief executive, also gave some upbeat interviews, indicating that, while many of GKN’s customers were cautious about the rest of 2012, “no one is pressing alarm buttons” about the wider economy. This is good news for GKN as many of its products are used in markets with impressive long-term growth, such as the automotive, agricultural and commercial airline industries. The number of vehicles on the road globally, for example, is expected to rise by 22pc between 2012 and 2017, according to industry body LMC Automotive. Of course, markets in Europe are expected to remain weak, but Asia will be robust. In the six months to June, sales rose 16pc to £3.5bn and pre-tax profits jumped to £289m from £202m. The dividend interim was raised by 20pc to 2.44p and it will be paid on September 24. The numbers resulted in one of the most bearish analysts on the shares upgrading his rating to hold. Last month, GKN made a good purchase – the aero engine division of Volvo. The business specialises in engine parts for commercial airliners, so is a good fit for GKN’s operations, which is focused on structural engineering. The shares are sitting at about the same level they were following the Volvo deal announcement, after drifting for most of the last month. The results failed to give the shares a lift, but Questor still thinks the shares represent reasonable value, given the prospects for its end markets. Fresnillo enjoys a premium stock market rating among London’s precious metal stocks for understandable reasons. The group has a solid operational history, net cash; solid growth plans and operates in Mexico which is a safe mining jurisdiction. The stock market rating for the group is therefore 20X for the current year which falls to 16X next year. This is supported by the dividend policy which sees around half of earnings paid out giving a dividend yield of over 2.5% However, moving to 2018 and the objectives are to boost silver output by 55% from the 2011 levels by 2018. For gold the target is more modest with a 500,000 ounce objective versus the 449,000 ounces seen in 2011 – an 11.3% increase. With silver the key driver of long-term value it remains appropriate to consider Fresnillo primarily as a silver producer. The share price has seen some pullbacks, with the key driver being equity market weakness in the second quarter and volatile precious metal prices. Looking at silver and gold, both showed strong performances in 2010 and 2011 with silver the strongest. Both precious metals will drive sentiment and profits towards Fresnillo in the near-term. In 2012 both silver and gold are broadly flat on their opening prices at the start of the year. However, this means that silver is weak versus 2011 while gold is flat on the average price seen last year. For Fresnillo the average realized gold price was up 26.6% in 2011 to US$1,585 while the average realized silver price was up a staggering 62.5% to US$35.75. Silver sees industrial demand as a key driver in contrast to gold which is driven by investment demand and jewellery. Thus there is a risk that silver could weaken further on slowing global growth but if gold performs well silver will follow it up to some extent (as investment demand flows to both metals). In terms of the half-year financial results we would expect rising gold output and a resilient gold price to offset weakness in silver prices and production. For the full year this is also likely to remain the case provided silver prices don’t weaken meaningfully from here. In terms of reserves the target is to have 650m ounces of silver and 5m ounces of gold by 2018 and as such the group continues to explore around its existing sites.
