It’s high time for CBD ice cream!31 May 2019 02:39
Ben & Jerry’s plans to launch flavours of ice cream with cannabidiol oil
Ice cream is often known to send people into a blissful stupor, but Ben & Jerry’s is attempting to make that official by adding a type of cannabis to some of its flavours.
The Vermont-based ice-cream maker is looking to join the wave of food manufacturers and retailers across the US rushing to invest in cannabidiol oil, commonly known as CBD.
The compound CBD is derived from a type of cannabis called hemp and President Trump legalised the cultivation of the crop at national level in December last year.
This has led a number of top American brands, including Coca-Cola, Walgreens, CVS and Mondelez, the maker of Oreo cookies, to consider developing or selling CBD-infused products. The marijuana industry was even showcased at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.
CBD oil contains no THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, so there is no high, but it is widely touted for its alleged health benefits including better sleep, reduced anxiety and pain relief, although most clinical studies have failed to prove this.
The sale and use of cannabis is legal in ten US states including California, Colorado, Nevada, and Washington. It has also been legalised across Canada.
“Interest continues to skyrocket,” Miriam Guggenheim, co-chairwoman of the food, drug and device practice group at Covington & Burling, a law firm, told CNBC. “It is mainstream, interest is mainstream. It is not fringe any more, which doesn’t mean mainstream companies are ready to jump in. But they want to be prepared to do so once the legal landscape is clarified.”
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bans adding CBD to food and drink but the first public hearing on legalising this is due today. The FDA plans to examine the potential health risks of the compound, including the effect on the liver from long-term use.
Ben & Jerry’s was founded in 1977 by the self-professed hippies Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Despite becoming a subsidiary of Unilever, the consumer products conglomerate, in 2000, Ben & Jerry’s has tried to retain its counter-culture origins and ethical credentials. It uses non-genetically modified ingredients and recently launched a range of vegan products.
The company said it intends to make “CBD-infused ice cream” available once it is legalised at a federal level.
