Anyone selling now would have benefited from about a 4p extra value in today's price compared with the price it would be had the 2022 and the current purchases not taken place. Easy enough to understand.
I have already said - a maintained market cap means an increased share price, but the market currently values Lloyds banking group at about a few Billion pounds less the 25th Feb last year.

that is a return to shareholders - in the share price - facilitated by buybacks

without the purchase and cancellation of those 6 Billion shares the current share price based on the current market cap would be a lot lower.

The current Lloyds price per share is virtually identical to the price as at when the 2022 buyback started, despite the market cap now being lower - that is due to getting on for 6 Billion shares having been bought and cancelled.

There is no argument when presented with facts.
£1.7 Billion has not been stolen from the business. This amount plus an additional £6.1 Billion would soon have been returned to shareholders.
