''Remember no movement in the share price, and the dividends are just sticking plasters over the losses on your capital.''
There is no capital growth with cash, only interest which had been virtually non existent for over a decade.
Shares are a risk that cannot guarantee what happens to capital values, but on the whole are a much better hedge against inflation in the long run. Even with a stagnant share price with dividends reinvested, it would most likely have resulted in a capital value of the accumulated shares having been an hedge against inflation over the original cost, and certainly easier in the long period of low inflation that we had until the pandemic/Ukraine war.
Of course some investments are going to perform better than others, but that comes down to an investors choice/luck.
