I hold a great deal of Lloyds shares - I personally don't count as having any gains until such time as my average price on remaining shares after a sale is below Zero. My current average price is 16.34p. I can of course sell enough shares at any time to recoup this 16.34p per share and more to then go into profit.

Any Capital gains calculation for the tax man is a separate issue.

For quite a while now, because of the very low capital gains tax threshold, I mainly restrict the selling of shares to those held in an ISA.

I have my laggard Saga outside an isa, so that is one stock if I chose to to do so could use as an offset to a selling of shares outside an isa. If I did that I would buy the shares at the same time in an ISA

I cannot see the point in making sales outside an isa to pay a 24% capital gains tax over and over and over- may as well just have the one off 40% IHT hit - hopefully a sensible party will get into power to get rid of IHT.

? any investor should know, that is why it was being silly. The number of trades labelled as a buy versus the number labelled as a sell doesn't have to correspond to the direction that the share price have taken in a day. To put it simply, you could have ten thousand buys at whatever the quoted buying price is , then bad news comes along near the end of day pushing down quoted prices where 500 sales are made at the quoted selling prices with prices falling by such an extent as to be down on the day
