Well actually I'm from Southampton and this is major drinking area in the South a lot of people visit weekend and there are a lot of stag and hen parties that turn up in the area.
Things have definately been quietening down recently, there was a report that we have some of the highest pub closures in the UK and some 58 (or something) gone in past 2 years.
Unlike Ireland, the UK is still NOT geared up for smokers, how many places still have not got proper smoking shelters, huts, heating etc.
With the recessiion I agree with you that a lot more people are staying at home (although in saying that my local is rammed recently and busiest I've seen it in over two years since I've lived here but that's due to change in management, setup of smoking hut and also Southampton FC club fortunes as well as European football that's massively increased it.
It depends on how good the summer is, I can see a lot more people staying in the UK and if we have good weather then I see this actually helping the pub trade as a counter-argument.
My mates that work in the Weatherspoons chain in Staines have said that takings are now massively up due to other competitors folding in the high street and they offer the cheapest beer in town.
I think these big chains will welcome this if they can survive through it as it will remove some competitors from the market, I think we needed this sort of consolidation really.
I'm 50/50. Short term suffer but longer term increase for these
