Brussels has been forced to extend London's lucrative euro clearing rights in a post-Brexit boost for the City as it seeks to protect its role as a global hub.

The European Commission has granted permission for banks on the Continent to continue accessing Britain's €660 trillion (£563 trillion) clearing market beyond an initial deadline of June 2022, amid fears that cutting them off would damage financial stability.

It did not state how long the extension would last, but UK officials believe it is likely to be open-ended.

The decision is a significant victory for British financial services and effectively ends short-term efforts by France and other rival countries to seize control of the market from London's clearing houses, which act as middlemen in derivatives trades between banks and have become a vital part of the system since the 2008 banking crisis.

October’s passenger traffic at Heathrow airport has gone up 144 per cent compared with the same time last year, following the easing of restrictions.

Data from the London hub has revealed that last month more than 3 million passenger passed through the airport, delivering the sixth consecutive month of growth. The relaxation of travel rules before half-term led to daily passenger numbers going up to almost 100,000 a day.

House price inflation in Britain picked up last month, propelled by a shortage of sellers that suggested further price rises lie ahead, a closely watched survey showed on Thursday.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said a net balance of 70% of its members reported an increase in house prices last month, up from a revised 69% in September.

Financial market infrastructure and service providers no longer need to discuss paying dividends in advance with the Bank of England, it said on Thursday.

LONDON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Britain's economy grew by 0.6% in September but estimates for previous months were revised lower, leaving GDP 0.6% smaller than it was in February 2020, shortly before the country went into its first COVID-19 lockdown.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast monthly gross domestic product growth of 0.4% for September.

US inflation has come in much stronger than expected.

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.9% in October after rising 0.4% in September.

Over the last twelve months it rose 6.2% compared to expectations of a figure of 5.9%.

The Halifax, part of Lloyds Banking Group, has transformed the Brighouse branch into its first net zero branch for operational carbon emissions, as part of its commitment to achieve net zero carbon operations by 2030.
The changes to the premises at Bethel Street have included replacing the gas boiler to a low carbon heat pump system to supply the branch with integrated heating and cooling, improving the building insulation and introduced a new smart building management system, so reducing the expected branch operational carbon emissions by over 90%.

All bulbs have also been replaced with LED lighting which are designed to use up to 80% less electricity than traditional fluorescent lights, saving enough energy in the branch to power an average UK home for two years.

The number of unemployed people in advanced economies has fallen significantly since July, research by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is set to show.

In its latest employment outlook, which is to be published next year, the OECD will show that labour markets have recovered faster than expected. Stefano Scarpetta, the organisation’s director for employment, labour and social affairs, said five million more people were unemployed than before the coronavirus pandemic, down from eight million in July.

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - British shoppers picked up the pace of their spending in October despite concerns about rising inflation, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

The British Retail Consortium said retail spending rose by 1.3% compared with October 2020, recovering some momentum after growth slowed to just 0.6% in September when a lot of spending shifted away from shops to panic-buying of fuel caused by a shortage of tanker drivers.
