Sept 1 (Reuters) - British manufacturing output and new orders fell by the most in more than two years in August in the face of deepening uncertainty about surging inflation and the risk of recession at home and abroad, a survey showed on Thursday.

The S&P Global/CIPS UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) dropped to 47.3 from 52.1 in July although the final reading was less weak than a "flash" estimate of 46.0.

“There is little doubt that businesses across all sectors are being impacted by the current geo-political and financial situations. Businesses that were beginning to see green shoots are now having to reconsider their approach and adapt to a new set of challenges.

“It is yet to be known whether the changes to the National Insurance threshold and business rates for the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors announced by the Chancellor will help these consumer facing businesses and it will be interesting to see how they respond to next month’s survey.”

Hann-Ju Ho, Senior Economist Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said:

“March’s data shows UK businesses are facing significant challenges from the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in increasing economic uncertainty and ongoing inflationary pressures. Following encouraging improvements at the start of the year, March’s fall in confidence is therefore disappointing, but not surprising.

“There are positives with the fact that confidence remains above the long-term average and it appears for now that growth will moderate. But it is difficult to gauge what the full impact will be and therefore businesses have become more cautious.”

Business confidence fell by 11 points to 33%, as inflation and Ukraine conflict increase uncertainty.

However, the 11 point fall is lower than drops in confidence in the first two months of the pandemic.

Over half of firms (55%, up three points) expect to increase prices in response to ongoing inflationary challenges.

Employment hiring expectations continue to signal strong demand for staff despite a seven-point fall to 31%.

Just three of the UK’s 12 regions recorded increases in confidence, with London increasing by 13 points to 60%.
Manufacturing (down 19 points to 35%) and retail (down 19 points to 28%) saw significant drops in confidence in March.

The FTSE 100 is expected to open slightly higher this morning despite a third day of falls in the US on Tuesday.

Spread betting companies are calling the lead index up by around 25 points.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrials Average closed Tuesday down 308 points, or 1.0%, at 31,791, the Nasdaq Composite lost 135 points, or 1.1%, to 11,883 and the S&P 500 dipped 44 points, or 1.1%, to 3,986.

The benchmarks saw red for the third day in a row as investors continued to react to a Federal Reserve that seems increasingly likely to continue hiking interest rates.

The FTSE 100 headed into negative territory as falls in mining and oil stocks saw the lead index concede its strong early gains. US stocks provided some support although their opening advances were not as strong as initially suggested by the futures market.

“Fed Chair Jerome Powell could not have been more clear on Friday on the central bank's tightening stance and unlike the warnings from his colleagues, the message appeared to have finally gotten through which makes today's move all the more curious,”

“With a 75 basis point rate hike now viewed as the more likely outcome from the Fed in a few weeks and ECB officials putting a similar move on the table ahead of its meeting next week, how strong of a recovery can we really expect in equity markets?”

Airlines are braced for a grim winter after struggling under the weight of booming demand for travel in the summer as the economic slowdown threatens their recovery from the pandemic.

The dire outlook has prompted warnings that passenger numbers could fall as household disposable incomes come under pressure from high inflation and soaring energy bills.

The Dow closed Monday down 184 points, 0.6%, at 32,099, the Nasdaq Composite slid 124 points, 1%, to 12,018 and the S&P 500 fell 27 points, 0.7%, to 4,031.

US stocks opened lower on Monday and are expected to continue tumbling following Fed chair Jerome Powell’s hawkish speech at the Jackson Hole symposium last week.

Just after the open, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had slipped 244 points or 0.8% at 32,039 points, the S&P 500 was down 33 points or 0.8% at 4,025 points, and the Nasdaq Composite had shed 113 points or 0.9% at 12,030 points

Wizz Air was crowned the worst airline for UK flight delays in 2021, according to data from the Civil Aviation Authority analysed by the PA news agency.

Figures showed that Wizz Air – which operates from 10 UK airports, including Luton and Gatwick – ran on average 14 minutes behind schedule.

Wizz Air was followed by Tui’s average delay of 13 minutes and British Airways’ (BA) 12 minutes.

Low-cost titans such as Easyjet and Ryanair performed better as Easyjet ranked second best, with a hold-up of four minutes, while Ryanair came in third.

City A.M. has approached the airlines for comment.

“While these findings are worrying, the reality has actually been far worse for many travellers this summer,” commented Guy Hobbs, editor of consumer champion Which? Travel.

“Holidaymakers have faced a barrage of disruption over the last few months, and these latest figures only serve to underline the need for urgent reform of the travel industry.

Following the reopening of borders, the aviation industry – especially in the UK – has been plagued by a raft of delays and cancellations.

Aug 29 (Reuters) - Economists at Goldman Sachs have sharply cut British growth forecasts and expect a recession to begin later in the year, as the impact of surging inflation on households' disposable incomes hits consumption.

Goldman expects the recession to begin in the fourth quarter of 2022, and forecast the economy will contract by 0.6% in 2023.
