This month alone, two start-ups with blueprints for a working quantum computer have made or announced their stock market debuts. IonQ became the first-ever quantum computing company to pull off a listing with its debut on the New York Stock Exchange. It now has a market capitalisation of about $2bn.

A week later, Rigetti Computing announced it too would float by being acquired by a special purpose acquisition company, a type of listed cash shell. The deal values it at about $1.5bn.

Quantum Blockchain Technologies’ (LON:QBT) latest UK patent application could be a major breakthrough in Bitcoin mining says the technology investment company CEO, Francesco Gardin. No wonder then that shares spiked 35% to 1.60 GBX on the news at the end of last month, before settling back to around 1.45 GBX.

The initial findings of the new R&D work have been very encouraging, with a 9.56% speed improvement already achieved as compared to the standard Bitcoin mining algorithm on the same type of machine. The Company is currently investigating other optimisations for Bitcoin mining, based on its innovative approach (people and technology), which it believes will deliver further and radical speed improvements which the Company is planning to file under an international patent.

In the early stages of the AI Deep-Learning tests to optimise the Bitcoin mining algorithm, QBT’s AI system autonomously generated one of the already existing optimisation provided to the Company by its expert. This first result strongly supports the AI Deep Learning strategy adopted by the Company.

The Company has also started to implement the first set of optimisations on FPGA, expecting early completed versions of the FPGA to be ready by the end of October 2021, while the optimisations covered by the above-mentioned patent are due by December 2021. ASIC development work is expected to start in parallel in October 2021.

--Should an API licence be granted it will provide the Company with the rights to connect to established payment gateways and commence a remittance business in the UK, which the Company intends to underpin by blockchain technology and its existing capabilities.

Velocys is among a handful of key industry figures to give its take on the year ahead in the latest edition of leading industry publication, Biofuels International.

Velocys’ CEO, Henrik Wareborn, makes clear that 2021 will be a crucial year in the development of the UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) industry, particularly in the context of COP26. He argues that “as hosts of the COP26 UN climate summit taking place in November, the UK has a unique platform and once-in-a-generation opportunity to demonstrate global leadership on tackling aviation emissions.”

Pointing to the progress that was made during 2020 with planning permission granted for the Altalto Immingham plant and the formation of the Jet Zero Council, 2021 is the time, he says, to “bring forward the necessary policy to match the ambition shown in 2020”.

A new type of Covid test could be available this winter - and it will tell sufferers how infectious they are.

It is hoped that ultimately it can be used to help reduce the amount of time they isolate for.

Scientists believe it might transform quarantine rules, according to the Mirror.

It is being created by British start-up Vatic and they have been registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MRA).

This is so that they can be used by professionals as part of an attempt to get the tests given the thumbs-up to be used at home.

Scientists say the test identifies if the virus is active in a similar way to how a flower bud can appear opened or closed.

If the spike in the virus is active, the bud would be open as it would use this to enter human cells. If it is closed, then this means the virus is inactive and the person is not infectious,

Covid sufferers would take a swab from their mouth and the test would produce a result in 15 minutes.

So far, during clinical trials involving about 1,000 people, no false positives have so far been produced.

Alex Sheppard, a co-founder of Vatic, said the tests were aimed to “restore the liberties and freedoms that were lost for almost two years”.

He added that the tests had been built to be future-proof against mutations.

“All of the other antigen tests which are out there, it’s not a question of if but when they’ll stop working,” he said.

“Eventually the tests will need to be redesigned because the virus will have mutated.

“Our test will always be able to detect the virus insofar as it will enter human cells through the same mechanism, and that wouldn’t change because if it did, it would be a new virus altogether."

News about the new test comes as demand for Covid tests has surged across the UK.

In fact, levels of demand have not been as high since during the European Championships.

The government will extend regulations and publish protocol to allow some tests supplied to the private testing market that are pending validation to remain on the market in the short term. This is to address any potential shortage of supply while work continues at pace to ensure only high-performing tests are ultimately approved to remain on the UK market. The government will continue to publish a list of private testing providers who meet the minimum standards for the public to choose from, with PCR test options available as well.

A British company says it has developed an easy-to-administer, saliva-based test that can detect whether a person is infectious enough to pass along the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

The company, Vatic, said in a statement that its test is “extremely accurate” and has not returned a single false positive result in its test group. “This is so important for getting life back to normal,” the company said.

Vatic said its “mission was to design a test that people won’t mind using multiple times a week.”

Tests results are available in 15 minutes, the company said.

The test is not available to the public yet as it undergoes more trials but Vatic is seeking approval for its sale directly to the public.

A report in The Economist says COVID in 2020 has brought an abrupt halt to the steady rise of the rate of lIfe expectancy.
