Last month, Rockfire Resources (LSE:ROCK) soared after announcing the potential discovery of a ‘large-scale gold deposit’ at its Plateau prospect in Queensland, Australia.

The business said drilling has returned broad, consistent gold assays with mineralisation occurring almost continuously throughout a 215m deep drill hole. In particular, the firm believes that hole BPL025 – which intersected 177 at 0.5g/t gold – has intersected the upper levels of a large mineralised system. Gold grades are now expected to increase continually alongside depth, as they do at a comparable 10-million-ounce gold project owned by Resolute Mining called Mt Wright.

Rockfire is now awaiting the results of a further 13 drill holes from Plateau, and already started a geophysical survey targeting anomalies to depths of around 500m below surface. This latter work aims to identify a ‘sweet-zone’, where higher average grades are likely to be attainable.

(Sharecast News) - Gold and base metal explorer Rockfire Resources announced on Tuesday that drilling of a new breccia zone - Central Breccia - has discovered high-grade, near-surface gold, 120 metres east of drill hole BPL025, which returned 177 metres at 0.5 grams of gold per tonne.

The explorer encountered its highest gold grade so far at Plateau, with this newly identified zone including an intercept of one metre at 21.7 grammes of gold per tonne

He noted that the latest holes extend the mineralised target zone by another 120m towards the east: “It is our expectation that the geophysics recently completed at Plateau may highlight potential for a ‘sweet spot’ with higher average grades at depth.”

Rockfire is awaiting results from 11 more drill holes, a mix of resource infill and pure exploration holes at depths between 30m and 90m, while a geophysical survey designed to detect anomalies to depths of around 500m has also recently been completed at Plateau, with results currently being processed.
