5 February 2021 Energy Storage:
More than 16GW of battery storage capacity is operating, under construction or being planned in the UK across 729 projects.

This is up from 10.5GW across 600 projects identified in December 2019, according to RenewableUK’s latest Energy Storage Project Intelligence report.

The report identifies 1.1GW of battery storage capacity currently operational compared to 0.7GW in December 2019.

A further 0.6GW is under construction, 8.3GW of capacity is consented and 1.6GW is in the planning system.

Another 4.5GW are identified as being at an early stage of development for future submission into the planning system.

Secondary legislation came into force in December allowing local planning authorities to determine projects with a capacity of over 50MW in England and 350MW in Wales.

Previously these were determined by central government, making the process longer and more complex.

RenewableUK has identified 3 projects which have since been submitted for determination by local planning authorities with a capacity of 100MW each.

RenewableUK’s director of future electricity systems Barnaby Wharton said: "We’re already seeing grid-scale batteries of 50MW being built, providing valuable flexibility to the grid, and we expect many projects with an even larger capacity will be submitted into the planning system following the removal of the 50MW cap."

However, many projects need access to capital at a lower cost and more stable revenues, he said: "We’re hoping that the forthcoming update to the Smart System and Flexibility Plan will set out how the Government envisages making revenue streams for storage projects clearer.

"We also need a stable network charging regime and a long-term vision for the sector to encourage further investment by cutting-edge companies."

Crown Estate accused of pushing up renewables prices as BP lands wind farm deal.

Oil giant BP is among the businesses to win the rights to build new wind farms in UK waters, it announced on Monday, as questions were raised about how the sites were allocated.

The Crown Estate, which manages the Queen’s property and land, said it had auctioned off eight gigawatts of potential new offshore wind capacity to help the UK meet its demand for renewable electricity.

However, the system it used to run the auction was criticised by RenewableUK, a trade body, for pushing up prices for businesses to deliver much-needed renewables into the UK’s grid..........

Developers of batteries in the U.K. have projects on the go that would increase the country’s capacity more than 14 times what it is today.

Batteries are crucial to complement renewable power by storing electricity from wind and solar farms. As the U.K. works to quadruple its offshore wind farm capacity this decade, the growing portfolio of battery projects will help keep the country’s lights on without burning fossil fuels, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

There are 16.1 gigawatts of battery storage projects either operating or in various stages of development, according to industry group RenewableUK. That’s up from 10.5 gigawatts at the end of 2019.

Much of that total is projects in the development stage. There are only 1.1 gigawatts of operational batteries currently, the group said.

Investors are eager to put money into the technology. Last year, the London-listed Gresham House Energy Storage Fund Plc that focuses on the sector raised over 120 million pounds ($164 million) to help the company grow its portfolio of British batteries.

A recent regulatory shift has also made it easier for developers to get approval for large-scale projects, the industry group said.

.... also, The evaluation of the 28 bids received under South Africa’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) is anticipated to be concluded by February 2021, the IPP Office has confirmed with Engineering News.
The preferred bidders, it adds, will be announced as soon as the recommendations from the evaluation team have been approved by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).
This is also SA time ... so could mean anytime up to the end of February ... at the earliest!
