I'm afraid Ukraine got itself to blame, land and assets was never Putin's objective given there was Minsk 1 & 2 and the Budapest Agreement which all would of guaranteed Ukraine's sovereignty (exc Crimea) yet Ukraine had to poke the bear and hurt Russian speaking Ukrainians in Donbas. Just look at Zelensky tone and body language in context to what he was saying. It was NEVER the objective to sign the mineral agreement or to thrash out a path to peace. Zelensky visit was more like laying the bear trap for Trump and his team to step on.

In 2014 the US backed Maidan coup d'état happened and the Ukraine was fighting the separatist Ukrainians in the Donbas region. These agreements (Minsk 1 & 2) Zelensky mentioned which Russia broke is wrong given the agreement was between Ukraine and the separatist Ukrainians in Donbas. The civil war pre February 2022 was internal within Ukraine and not Ukraine versus Russia. Russia, Germany and France were the guarantors in the Minsk agreements 1 & 2 and that's all. Russia did annex Crimea in 2015 and not a bullet was fired and the people in Crimea decided to join Russia (Hence the right of self-determination) which is not different if Scotland or former Yugoslavia regions decided to be independent .
