Itsaduster:
Enjoyed your cricketing story - reminded me of a pleasant summers afternoon walking along the Devon clifftops, in the early 80's, and stumbling on the Babbacombe (I think), village cricket team, enjoying a game against the visitors.
My then girlfriend, (now wife), decided to sit a while and enjoy the sound of leather upon willow, in the tranquil surroundings and sunny environment.
It was an idyllic scene, the sound of the waves below, the birds in the air, slight breeze in the trees, ice cream in hand and a most gentlemanly sport being undertaken with the utmost decorum.
Until the visiting fast(ish) bowler released a full-toss at shoulder height (he must have been mugging up on bodylining), and the batsman could only attempt a desperate, flailing, square cut that failed, miserably, and the ball hit him in the collar bone.
The, then, serene vista, was shattered with the cry of "you fookin twat, I'll have you for that", as he then realised some damage had been done and promptly fell to the ground.
As you say, the St Johns, at last, see some action, and come running with the stretcher and cart him off to the ambulance.
Almost choked on my ice -cream.
Still is a recollection that my missus and I enjoy to this day, saying "must go back to Babbacombe, and find out who won that match".
