The first UK Mathematical Biology Conference in Birmingham was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on where the field is heading.
Over two days, we explored how mathematical modelling is being applied in oncology and beyond – from predicting treatment outcomes and enhancing immunotherapies, to new data-driven approaches in bioinformatics and machine learning.
🗨️ A particular highlight was a presentation by Professor Gibin Powathil on hybrid cell-based modelling used to explore treatment effects, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and radiation-induced bystander effects on tumour cell growth. Discussions across the two days emphasised that modelling critically offers the ability to explore testable hypotheses in areas where biology remains less well understood.
These themes align closely with our work at Physiomics plc, where we apply modelling to design better studies, reduce uncertainty and help bring promising treatments to patients faster.
We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation at our next events:
📍 ACoP (Annual Conference of the International Society of Pharmacometrics), 18–21 Oct
📍 BIO-Europe, Vienna, 3–5 Nov
If you’re attending, we’d love to connect and discuss how modelling can inform better study design and accelerate development. 🙌
