British car industry suffers worst April sales for 18 yearsChristine Buckley, Industrial Editor
New car sales in Britain fell last month to their lowest April level for 18 years and clocked up the eleventh consecutive monthly decline.
Sales fell by 24 per cent in April compared with the same month last year, taking the decline for the year so far to 28.5 per cent, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The fall was less than the organisation had feared. It had forecast a sales total of about 118,000, but 133,475 new vehicles were sold.
This month carmakers will be hoping for an improvement in sales from the scrappage incentive scheme that is due to be introduced on May 18. The Government is offering owners of cars that are more than ten years old £1,000 to scrap them and buy new ones. Carmakers are being asked to match the government payment.
