It was NOT a guaranteed failure and you know it - so stop spinning it to justify the fact you called your short right.
1) there was the MA factor - a RNS was issued to suggest a 5p takeover offer may happen - whether right or wrong some shareholders expected it to happen
2) there were various options on the table - only some involved shareholder wipe out - I maintain they went down this route to lock SPD out
3) the company did not need to restructure so quickly - unless trading went off a cliff and no research is going to predict this!
4) as for research - what else can investors do but read the RNSs including outlook and results and make an informed decision? It was a gamble - but a guaranteed failure? NO !! (because the company is still trading ffs)

Can we be clear - there is no "short squeeze" because no one is shorting this!
Only £4k in trades has caused a 20% increase.. that's fine - but it works both ways - a few large sells and it will fall back just as quick. Before you say I am being negative - no... I am being factual because it has happen time and time - also no one ever say when they sell. If I am wrong and this is due to pending news and stake building - I will be happy to be proven wrong

BTW if it's your JOB to short - of course you will have more time to research than the small private investor - but i doubt any one calls every investment right do they? Perhaps because your risks are infinite re shorting - this type of investing is as close to gambling as playing with the AIM market (!!) imo

Meta - I disagree - the company is still trading and has a plan to resolve current issues - it has not always been knackered because it was making £100 million plus profits just two years ago. The reason why some of us thought a recovery was possible was that the company had been in the xxxx twice before over the last 20 years but recovered. It still might recover - just that this time the shareholders will not be part of the solution. If the company is still trading this time next year perhaps you will admit the company was not knackered - just that the solution meant shareholders were not able to make a contribution via a rights issue or D4E due to the low market value - thanks to the directors leaving it too late. BTW you have no idea of my track record or portfolio - nor do I have an idea how you are performing -so don't make assumptions. BTW Helphire is not "a cool story" - its a fact. When i transferred my pension to a SIPP i stupidly put most of the fund into one share - thankfully it paid off increasing 15 fold. However the lesson i learnt was to spread my risk to multiple investments - so Debenhams was just 2% or less of my portfolio while holding. For my current company pension i hold property and bonds - so lets stop the personal attacks ok?

I wondered when my stalker would turn up :-) For the record - if you trade dozens of high risk AIM shares you will get winners .. and losers... as for my track record.. well I was set up for life buying tens of thousands of shares in Helphire (Redde) at 1p when everything looked lost... lets just say my SIPP ended up with enough to buy a few decent houses in Clifton Bristol - but of course I will be the first to say I have picked a few turkeys too - as for Debenhams I knew it was high risk hence why I did not go big here.. I trust the shorters also only put in what they could afford to lose because I contest that for some time here the outcome was NOT clear...

BTW who were the insiders Devon? Pearls was bullish - he was after all a shareholder (!!) and did not tell others to buy in - he just wrongly expected a positive outcome. The debt was manageable - the bonds due to mature in two years time. Obviously something changed quite quickly here - somehow the debt (facilities) doubled and needed resolving. (credit insurance going did not help). If you have been reading here then you know that other options did not result in shareholders being wiped out - what were these options because shareholders never got involved - except SPD who got rebuked at every opportunity. When a company goes from making £33 million underlying profit and has going concern as fine within its accounts - to loss making - doubling debt - and wiping out shareholders within a few months - surely most here would expect directors to resign or have questions to answer. BTW the former CEO did buy £100k worth of shares not that long ago... he obviously got it wrong too!

Sorry but you didn't "come here initially". You set up an (new) account and have only posted here - some other posters also on the negative side seem to post on the same threads - maybe three separate individuals - or part of a fund - or just shorters - who cares now but be honest about it.
BTW shareholders were NEVER asked to put more money in - that's the point and the failure of the directors. They could have done a rights issue last year when the share price was higher and the trading still reasonable. They did not - they left it too late - and sorry but that is not the fault of the shareholders is it!
Daniel - well pleased you made money from your short - as I stated previously - not a tool I will use but understand it has its uses as sometimes a company share price is over valued. I rather be positive - look from share value appreciation - and recovery - but profit from failure and shareholder/employee misery. Each to their own I guess,.

Pearls - sorry but there's a difference between suspension and delisting... if the shares were just suspended then your shares might come back.. when the shares are delisted/cancelled I can't think of any circumstances were the shares have subsequently been relisted and the shareholders had their holdings back to trade. The best case - and still unlikely - is that somehow you get compensation via any court case by SPD - again considering the debt - unlikely. The best you probably can hope for is that the directors are somehow found guilty of misleading shareholders etc. TBH MA has not yet shown any interest in taking this further (since the delisting).. he can't afford to wait if he is going down the legal route (imo)

LOL well YOU are not "moving on" are you?!! Hindsight is a wonderful thing - it was a bad investment for some - others made some profit on the spikes... the truth is that some here believe the restructuring happened sooner than necessarily (to stop SPD imho) ..that trading somehow got a lot worse far sooner than expected (re "going concern for the next 12 months in the annual accounts").. and there is an question on some of the wording within a couple of the RNSs... SPD have some explaining to do too... they should have put up or shut up... sorry but some shareholders want questions and they are entitled to ask! Personally I am pleased that the company continues and none of my local stores are affected at the moment - but when thousands are about to lose their jobs - some director heads should roll - without massive pay offs !!!

The warnings were more like a few weeks - perhaps the last two months - from some posters ... once the RNS landed to say shareholders may be wiped out under some of the options. What were the other options available?
It's all history under the bridge now and no point tbh having arguments here now just for the sake of it - discussion may continue depending on whether MA takes legal action. As for "robbed".. well lets just say the directors could have carried out a rights issue in 2017 or 2018 which may had helped matters. The directors could have stopped dividends sooner. Could have carried out a CVA sooner etc etc. So maybe not "robbed" but a similar word I feel is valid.. I wonder what word the employees losing their jobs might use?

Never seen you so angry - just looked in on the news - the share price should be near a bottom now but Sainsburys will probably still need a merger or acquisition at some point to avoid market share being reduced further - ditto ASDA. When Tesco is allowed a market share of 30% it does make you wonder why this was rejected - perhaps the regulator did not approve of two giants having 60% of the market??
BTW a relative is an employee of ASDA - most of them will be happy with the news as they all expected significant job cuts is the merger had been approved..

Pearls, Debenhams did survive (it was the shareholders that did not) and perhaps once 30-40 stores are closed and a CVA happens the company may end up leaner and profitable. I do think the restructuring happened sooner than expected to get "rid" of the MA factor. Remember some people did make money here over the last few months trading on the spikes while others - like you - held on. It will be interesting to see if MA takes any legal action against the company/directors - or is all mouth and no trousers. Good luck elsewhere.

Understand your view but do you really want 30000 employees to lose their jobs just to teach a few directors a lesson? They will be fine whatever happens. Look at the payoff for Sergio

Fool - you only been on here a few weeks.. so if you remember the £1 days which were a long time ago, you obviously had s former ID !!!

Here are some examples.. "I just bought £100k and xxx reasons for buying are.." "I just sold the share - sorry guys I am out because...." Here are the positives and reasons I have added today..
Just some examples of posters giving out their trading position - their buy/sell opinion - then if other posters want to challenge them or ask they why they are of x opinion - they can! That's called DISCUSSION.
BTW I repeat 3-4 other posters have questioned the new posters motives - not just me - yet its only me you targeted. The poster is quite entitled to tell me were to go or not to say why they are here BUT that doesn't stop me being able to ask the question. BTW if posters could not question other posters views or motives LSE will be extremely quiet !!
