His fantastic miscalculation over Ukraine shows Putin is no longer quite ‘all there’ so you can’t confidently say he will or won’t nationalize ‘foreign’ assets. It certainly would fit into his glory days of old USSR narrative when and correct me if I’m wrong, there was only state ownership of assets. The problem however is that a lot of his inner circle whose loyalty is likely money first Putin second, doubtless have very large investments in these companies (Evraz being a case in point) and would stand to lose billions. Palace coup?

Other than allowing us the pretence that we are doing something, what purpose do they serve ? If history is any judge they have zero deterrence value . The industries or people in power that they target always seem to find ways around them and the only harm they do is to the ordinary persons on the street ( for example us ) who were never part and in Russia at least are not never going to play any part in the decision making process in the first place,
We’ve made life harder for Russians by freezing Russian banking assets and restricting borrowing, fine, but this could just as easily play into the Putin narrative that the West has it in for Russia as cause public grumbling with the Kremlin’s Ukraine policy.
This is currently a problem requiring a military solution and since we are not going to take direct military action the best we can do is to redouble our efforts in suppling the Ukrainians with weapons ,intel and whatever else they need.

The SOD (Secretary of Defence) is quite right . The Russian pretext for invading the Ukraine is ludicrous and no one can rightly argue otherwise. Those who sympathize with Russia and it's ever shrinking sphere of influence need to understand that no one wants to partner up with a bully prone to acts of violence when its demands aren't met.
Yet the Kremlin keeps pushing the same strategy.
Russia is the largest country in the world filled with untold mineral wealth. It has plenty oil and a highly educated people. It should be one of the top 3 economies in the world but look at it.
The Kremlin seems filled to the rafters with yesteryears men ,living in yesteryears world ,playing yesteryears games. Russia has only its self to blame .

Yup, took a punt late in the day today ( along with a few others POLY,EVRAZ;RAVP ). Not too sure this will rise tomorrow but my thinking is that Russia with 150k troops ( a third probably logistical etc) cannot exercise a monopoly of force in a country the size of the Ukraine with a population of 40million. He's obviously looking to degrade the Ukrainian military and it's infrastructure as much as possible and might seize a bit of territory here and there as bargaining chips but his real objective is to create two independent states (albeit enlarged) within the Ukraine. It's possible he might also target industrial complexes but I doubt he will be able to destroy a mine. If I get my head handed to me on this one, I get my head handed to me on this one.

I think 'love' might be a bit of a strong word. The debt of most governments is not nearly as homogenous as maybe supposed (about 25% of the UK government’s debt is index linked for example)and while it’s true that inflation will reduce the value of that debt in real terms , high inflation coupled with higher interest rates will also diminish your ability to service that debt. Particularly if, as you point out you need to borrow more money to service the interest on your debt ( in an environment of reduced economic activity). Additionally, as we saw with the financial crisis , it only takes a few (or one) of the weaker hands to wobble before everyone else starts to feel the heat.

Time will tell as it always does.

Ever since the Alliance blew up the proverbial Soviet death star and ended the cold war the empire has been itching to strike back. No one takes Russia seriously anymore. Market commentators dismiss a Russian invasion of the Ukraine as essentially economically irrelevant. US politicians dismiss Russia as ‘’a petrol station masquerading as a country’’. Their demands for an end to NATO expansion in what they consider their backyard have been ignored for years. They get no respect. It’s possible Putin’s ultimate plan is to change all that, to reset Russia’s relationship with the West on a more equal footing.
It’s pretty clear that the Ukrainians have nothing the Russians want, that they are simply a means to an end .What Putin is looking for are sanctions sufficient to justify cutting oil supplies to Europe in the hope of sending not only oil much higher but inflation too. If he can create double digit inflation in countries that have huge debt burdens (pretty much everybody except Russia ) and need low interests to service them he could well cause a recession in the West. After all , Russia is sure to go into recession if sanctions are applied and oil and gas revenues are cut. Why not have some company.
The Achilles heel in this strategy of course is OPEC but this organisation seems more disciplined than ever in sticking to its quotas and resisting Western pressure to increase production. He’s also presumably given the Chinese all sorts of cheap oil assurances (if they behave themselves) while he was recently there.

Usually Halifax reinvests my divis the next working day after the pay date so I don't expect them to show up in my account until monday.

PB1- I did the rough calculation a while ago based on the yield. BP seems most consistently to trade on a 5-6% yield which translates to a price of 5-6 pounds . I took the middle of this range 5.5 ( which is also the median of the 4-7 you stated ) and halved it because the divi got halved (2.75). Yes the full range should be 2.5-3.0 but I dismissed the top part of that range as a C19 discount.
No doubt Tacet will want to have words regarding my wishy washy arithmetic and kindergarten extrapolations but there you go.
Razu - Yes, I live in the South of Turkey near Fethiye and I would highly recommend this region. If a more Switzerland typre landscape is your thing, try Rize or Trabzon up near the Black Sea .

Possibly because at around 2.75 we are at the historical average for the BP yield and. Based on what BP said it appears that the divi has been decoupled from the oil price with higher earnings going into paying down debt, share buybacks and the transition to green. So no divi increase and the pandemic still raging it's a miracle we got this far. For those who want to trade, this share is probably a short term sell at 275 plus.

Well, every silver lining seems to have a cloud ! My other investments TW and HSBC also went ballistic today but I am only at 82% average invested in all three . What do I do now ? Chase this rally ?

I think we have long since reached a SP where the market has created great long term value . So why wait for a higher price when you can have at least a nibble here . If then the price falls to a new lower trading range then buy some more. TA seems of more value to traders who won't want to sit on losses , are happy buying high and selling higher and who are in today out tomorrow.
