The massive logistical failure of the Russian army clearly shows that he expected to be welcomed with open arms and that it would all be over in a few days.

1. 1000's of innocent Ukrainian civilians killed
2. Destroy the Russian economy
3. Galvanize NATO
4. Destroy the reputation of the Russian armed forces.
5. Unify the West
6. Become China's poodle
7. Become a global pariah

So far so good.
I can't wait to see what new accolades he will be able to add to his resume next week.

I think there's very little chance now that he has started this war he will win territorial concessions from the Ukrainians. No government could survive politically if it did so.

When will the war end ?
1. when someone removes Putin or he removes himself
2. When Putin has some basis for selling the invasion as a success ( capture of the capital and or Zelinsky).

Seems somewhat superfluous to delist Evraz ( Evraz clearly seems to want to avoid it) once you have already suspended trading in its shares. The company is clearly trying to distance itself from oligarchic connections in compliance with the government's requirements. At the same time the Russian government is clearly trying to bend over backwards for international companies to stay invested in Russia so the threat of nationalisation seems about zero.

Why are you surprised at the cautious optimism you see here? The weaker hands folded long ago . Those that are left are either sitting on large paper losses that they refuse to recognise or recent arrivals that think that for every pound put in will eventually be a pound they get back in dividends every year for as long as they hold the shares. Put in what you can afford to lose and potentially get that back every year. High risk , high reward. Not every share you own has to be a safe as houses plodder.

I'm hoping these Oligarchs don't sell their assets in companies like Evraz. Those that have been sanctioned shouldn't be able to anyway. It makes it less likely that Putin will seize these companies assets in Russia and we seem already to have survived the LSE witch hunt ( for now).
I've written off the divi. I'd far rather the company survive and give me capital growth over the longer term than cough up a divi and then go kaput.

Along with Evraz it past the criteria set out by the LSE to determine whether or not it was a British company. That said we still don't know if Putin is going to nationalise it in Russia as a foreign company. If there is still sufficient oligarchy ownership possibly not.

The company will be heading into a tougher trading environment going forward due to higher inflation and interest rates. EPS will likely be lower and share buybacks will mitigate this. It seems to be shifting from paying out to paying in. In other words focusing away from value into capital growth. IMO

It would take only one bullet to end this war. Considering that the whole political apparatus in Russia functions like some gargantuan mafia this isn’t such an unrealistic outcome.
Alternatively, by prearrangement China could start massing its troops on its Russian border. It could use a number of pretexts ( worried for the potential for a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine etc ) and thus allow Russia to exit the Ukraine and redeploy to the east. Then again by prearrangement the situation on that border would slowly defuse. Putin would have his off ramp, The Chinese would come out smelling of roses, the rest of us could breath a sigh of relief and our Russia related shares would stop tanking . Everyone’s a winner.

Probably quite a bit of institutional selling on ethical / political grounds has taken place not based on fundamentals.

Let me try and get this into some perspective. If Boris had invited the Queen, a load of hookers and liberally dispensed class A drugs at one of his Covid parties. Then invited the whole mob to orgy outside Downing street with the world press looking on while he himself danced starkers on the steps with his arm around the Queen, Boris still couldn’t hold a candle to the cluster fff this war has produced for Russia.

Russia has already lost this war in so many ways that in the grand scheme of things the outcome of the invasion of the Ukraine no longer really matters.
Russia is being politically isolated and economically crippled, possibly for years to come. It’s foremost ambitions, a withdrawal of NATO from it’s boarders and a veto on it’s enlargement has spectacularly backfired. Putin is also facing pretty vigorous global condemnation.
So, the real rationale that led him to invade the Ukraine ( unless you buy into that unsubstantiated neo-nazis genocide claptrap ) has evaporated. If he still has any sense left he will be looking for an exit strategy and fast because doubling down will not work.

It doesn’t appear that Truth is the first casualty of this war (unless you work for the Russian state media) it looks more and more like it was the Russian plan. ,Some additional hard facts ;
1. Only someone who has lived with his head in the ground for the past 40 years thinks this war will end should the whole of the Ukraine be occupied by Russian.
2. It has succeed in galvanising NATO, encouraging neutral powers to apply for membership and bought even more NATO troops to Russia’s borders.
3. There are no countries outside of Europe ‘actively supporting’ Russia.
4. The odds of a palace coup are improving every day .
5. Russia will be paying for this war economically and politically for years to come.
