Is this strong rise a positive reaction to news? James Lewis, the new CEO of NXT, intends to move the company from being an IP vendor towards supplying systems. Lewis is looking at different ways to extend the NXT business model. “We could offer a finished model – sell a kit of parts which customers can put into a design; or we could white label a finished product; putting something out with our own name on it is not discounted. NXT’s technology has been extensively licensed in the Far East, but the company is now looking to supply hardware/software modules, sub-systems, and end products. The quality deliverable by the technology allows, for instance, USB speakers offering a much higher level of audio than previously thought possible through a USB port. Another application of NXT’s bending wave technology is in displays. Multiple transducers in displays create waveforms which can be manipulated by algorithms to produce tactile sensations for finger-tips NXT is using the technology to provide tactile experiences - like providing a click, or the sensation of a bump - when you’re using finger-tips on a glass surface. The Technical Plastics division has experienced good levels of demand compared to the same period last year. Volumes in the US medical business have recovered strongly and other operations are all performing well, the company said. In Precision Products, supercar lighting programmes at Wipac are coming online and will contribute to much stronger trading in the second half. The aerospace operations, however, have not yet seen any significant increase in sales, although order intake is now rising and the businesses are performing satisfactorily. Progress at Conductive Inkjet Technology has been good, the company added. “The group is well placed to enjoy continued growth in its medical diagnostics, LED [light emitting display] optics and lighting businesses as well as having exciting prospects at Conductive Inkjet Technology,” the statement concluded.

The impact of the latter is too early to call, although news of a new chief executive could be a catalyst. Our target price has been raised to 556p from 475p. So, expectations for better organic growth are dashed in the short term, but news of the new chief executive and strong cash flow should see shares back over 400p, IMO.

Mr John Richard Mapplebeck has joined the board as a non-executive director. A career banker with NatWest, Mr Mapplebeck spent 8 years in New York working with international energy, power and natural resources clients. In 2002 Mr Mapplebeck was appointed Chairman of Killingholme Power Group Ltd which owned and operated a 650MW gas-fired power station on the Humber estuary. The power station was sold to Centrica Plc following the completion of an extensive turn-a-round programme. Mr Mapplebeck will fill the office being vacated by Mr Charles Cameron who decided not to offer himself up for re-election following his retirement by rotation at today's Annual General Meeting.
