I was working on Thursday in a private rented flat. The two tenants are husband and wife from Zimbabwe. Both asylum seekers. I sparked up a conversation with them. They came via the English Channel, they have friends here in Manchester and there was no hotel accommodation for them, so the council puts up couples and families in private rented accommodation. They said that England has been so good to them, weekly asylum payment (fifty quid each a week), free accommodation, gas and electricity bill paid direct by the council and the occasional use of foodbanks. And the two nails in my coffin? He's working on the black economy, painting and decorating with his mate, no tax and NI. They're 'pollical asylum seekers' because of death threats back home, that's why they came here, but saving money because when they're granted leave to remain, they're 'going back to Zimbabwe for a holiday'. Work that one out. They're oblivious as to the mood of the nation because they watch their own news via the internet. Nice enough couple, but they shouldn't be here.
