Flybe/Connect Airways Valuation11 Jan 2019 20:04
As we are aware, Stobart will received 30% of the shares of the new joint venture, Connect Airways. In response to that news the Stobart share price rose 7.2% today. As the Stobart market cap has increased from £532m yesterday to £570m today, this is a rise of £38m. The market has therefore valued a 30% stake in Connect Airways at £38m. This therefore means that Connect Airways can be seen as being valued at £38m/30% = £127m.
Flybe's Board are recommending selling a company which the market has valued at £127m for £2.2m.
Flybe's problems are short term with immediate cash flow being an issue. To simply throw in the towel and flog the company for less than 2% of its value of £127m is ridiculous. Surely fire sales of its HQ to Exeter Airport or another party as well as further sale and leasebacks of planes could raise at the very minimum £20m for immediate cash flow needs. Surely even a CVA would be better than this low offer?
Flybe has a huge amount of stakeholders to call on for help, Cardiff airport, Exeter airport and many, many more. The Board can surely do better to use Flybe's power and leverage to raise further money to help the company out. There is good chance that some of the jobs at Exeter airport will be lost on this takeover anyway, as reported by the newspaper Devon Live. This takeover by no means guarantees all the employee's jobs.
If Flybe can get through this dire period of Winter then there could be a strong Summer ahead to strengthen the balance sheet for next winter. The BOD only started selling assets a few months ago when the crisis was already taking place. How could they not have foreseen this cash flow shortage happening earlier? They already know that Winter is tough and so they had large wiggle room with the net assets of the company being more than £80m to begin selling assets earlier.
Ultimately are people seriously to believe the Board's advice that the best they can get for a company worth £127m is £2.2m? Is this the same board than not one year ago advised turning down a far higher offer from Stobart? Utter madness.
