What does it mean to go for a Burton?

Gone for a Burton is a British English expression meaning to be missing or to die. The term was popularised by the RAF around the time of World War II. It migrated to the USA quickly and in June 1943 a story titled "Husky Goes Down for a Burton" appeared in Boys' Life, the magazine of the Boy Scouts of America.

While I have heard the expression I don’t really know where or why it was used!!!

I would think there are a lot of people who have bought and see their investment rise on the hype surrounding the projected return on higher interest rates that were just looking for a reason to bail and take their money off the table, it’s the smart move?

Say they start lowering in March 2024, by September they get to 2.5% again.

What do we think about BOI profit for 2024? It’s hardly going to fall off a cliff….

A 2.5% rate should be looked at a desirable stable rate level for normal business?

Markets fully priced six quarter-point rate cuts by the European Central Bank in 2024 earlier on Wednesday, a move that would take the key rate to 2.5%. Although bets were pared slightly later in the day, Deutsche Bank helped stoke the dovish sentiment by revising its outlook to also forecast 150 basis points of cuts.

Still a flipping lot better than the -0.5% we were a short table ago!

It’s hard to listen to the various dicks berating Irish Banks as the International banking industry shuns Ireland. Why have virtually all the competing banks left Ireland - Ans - they couldn’t put up with the sanctimonious BS from the central bank and the political environment that said banks are BAD! Now the winging will be about “not enough competition “ give me a break!

And now w the Central Bank shoots down an Irish payment service “because it needs a separate licence to operate etc” Jesus Wept!

Cooking, probably but I am hoping that US @ 5.25%, UK @ 5.25% will help keep ECB @ 4.00% stable for a while longer before coming under pressure to ease them…

I would think we are now in the sweet spot interest rate wise. We wouldn’t want them any higher so as to lead to defaults while at current levels they are bringing a bit of discipline to the borrowers.

A year or two at these levels would be just the ticket!
