I suppose I am talking about the overall return to shareholders as a proportion of the PAT, I view both dividends and buybacks in this category, is that not the case? I seem to remember the company having a similar view?

You assume that the bumper profits continue unabated?

What if there is falling off in profits, which leads to a reduction in SP. ( we have been buying our own shares when the SP and profits were supercharged?).

Give the shareholders the dividend and let us decide whether to buy more BOI shares or a boat?

For ease of calculation let’s say the share buybacks reduce shares in issue by 5% and so would have increased our €0.60 dividend to €0.63.

Forget the share buybacks and our dividend would have been €1.10, an 83.3% increase!

Also a bird in the hand and all that…..

Not to be the broken record, but the market can undo all the carefully planned share buybacks in an afternoon, the market really doesn't give a hoot if BOI has 1.010B shares or 1.030B! Best to have a beefy dividend and the SP will look after its self and the market will do what it will in any event.

Just tuning in to early election results coverage and the SF wave is looking more like a ripple, coupled with lukewarm interest rate reductions and a decent performance from both the government finances and the overall economy, I am starting to feel a bit more sanguine about our good old FKIR!

I am no economist, but I suppose a stable interest rate between 3-4% would be out of the question? Inflation at 2% and interest rates if at least 1% above it seems sensible? This craic of ultra low or 0% rates is just constant juicing?

As if to make my point this shares SP has lost the equivalent of the buybacks this last 2 days!

I am not convinced that these dribbles of buybacks are really moving the SP. News on SF, ECB, commercial property, market sentiment etc. are all way more potent.

I don’t really care if we have 1.030 billion shares in issue or 1.010 billion? In my opinion what would move the dial would be a €1 dividend…..what would the SP be then? Now, of course I would say this!

That’s sound and I get all that about less shares in issue.

However, the increased SP of a stock is subject to the whims of the market, where as if I get my dividend, I get actual money. I take a return on my investment for the year, and that’s money off the table. (I hold most stocks in a pension, so dividends are free of tax ). Betting on whether a stock goes up or down and the company trying to pump the SP with it’s profits doesn’t suit me and could all be for nothing if the market turns against banks again?

I also think that buybacks are an ineffective tool to increase the SP, soon forgotten about. A whopping dividend would get everyone’s attention!

My bugbear is the current fad of share buybacks versus paying out profits as dividends.

The shares are already out there…..nobody is counting them…..but dividends are headline news…..just pay the man!

If you are not constantly selling your shares, (gambling), then buybacks are immaterial. If you buy shares to provide an income then all you want is dividends, so pensions and retirees are getting screwed with this obsession.

John, nobody on the AIB forum so going to ask here, I assume that AIB have spent the €1.0B and bought back and cancelled 200M odd of the former governments shares?

If that as true, the €1B buyback hasn’t exactly blown the doors off the share price?

I wonder if Simon is thinking of doing a Rishi and calling a summer election after the locals? I suppose it depends on those but it didn’t stop Rishi and SF are in about of a trouble with their messaging atm. A return of FG/FF and independants would be a solid result for the Irish banks, especially AIB.

bankinter = ole version of revolut. no mention of current account or branches? i have had a great experience with digital banks (revolut) for fx exchange and a better version of go henry and a **** poor experience with them again revolut! for missed loan payments and a 4 month wait to speak to an actual person, again had to involve the banking ombudsman!
