Surely we should judge by successes rather than failures and most of the failures mentioned could reframed much more positively.
The OM case didn’t collapse because it lacked merit—it fell apart on a technicality, something that sits with the lawyers. Despite that, Rockhopper still turned the situation into a material gain by selling part of the award and taking out the insurance policy.
The Premier Oil situation was unfortunate, but it’s important to recognise what the team did achieve: Sam and the board successfully negotiated a farm‑in agreement not once, but twice. Many companies struggle to secure even a single deal of that scale—yet they managed to rebuild and secure a second partnership after the first one fell apart.
The tax issue is far from ideal, but the agreed repayment terms mean it’s unlikely to have a significant long‑term impact on the company’s position.
In short: you shouldn’t judge someone by whether setbacks occur, but by how effectively they respond to them. And on that measure, the track record looks far stronger.
