If it is true that well head shut-ins lead inevitably to serious permanent damage due to water-coning, gas cap formation, and paraffin deposition, then how is it possible to conduct annual 2- 4-week maintenance shutdowns?

The fact is that no reservoir damage occurs and the reservoir simply stabilises.

Oil companies routinely shut in wells for maintenance, storms, pipeline outages, or economic reasons. If shutdowns damaged reservoirs, the industry simply wouldn’t do it.
