Last November, Gold Fields' attempt to buy Yamana was scuppered by a rival offer from Agnico Eagle (AEM.TO) and Pan American Silver Corp (PAAS.TO).

Gold Fields' interim chief executive officer Martin Preece said that while the company still wanted to expand its assets, it would not just add ounces "just for ounces' sake."

"We're going to be a little more circumspect, look at more incremental growth, rather than big transformational projects," Preece said during an investor call.

Preece added that adverse market reaction to the Yamana bid, which saw Gold Fields' shares plunging 20%, showed investors were averse to paying significant premiums.

1.Tolling principles, as yet to my understanding is yet to be agreed, however there is a clear intention (IMHO) to use Telfer re Havieron given it's close proximity and this has already been outlined by Newcrest, makes no sense to not use it given.

‘Telfer is the largest processing facility in the Paterson Province and has sufficient capacity and capability to process other discoveries in this region. Newcrest believes that the Paterson Province presents significant additional opportunities for Telfer in the future. '

So for me, Telfer is most certainly an integral part of the JV agreement, and so therefore would if challenged in a court of law re the JV agreement raise many questions , eg What were the legal intentions of both parties etc ?

Cannot see NCM wriggling out this without a fight should that be CP's concern.

Prior to a Decision to Mine being made, the Havieron Joint Venture Agreement permits the carrying out of certain early works that are preparatory to mining operations (such as the construction of the box-cut and decline, camp infrastructure and associated works). It is under this framework that the underground decline is being progressed. However, there is an overriding requirement that any construction or development works at Havieron are subject to each Havieron Joint Venture participant’s rights to require a Decision to Mine (which itself requires the Havieron Feasibility Study and unanimous Havieron Joint Venture Management Committee approval, subject to a deadlock mechanism).

The Havieron Joint Venture Agreement contemplates that Havieron could leverage the Newcrest group’s existing Telfer infrastructure and processing plant, and sets out certain Havieron Joint Venture Agreement Tolling Principles upon which a toll processing agreement would be negotiated and agreed between Greatland and Newcrest prior to processing of Havieron ore at Telfer.

Having said all that..........I think you are wrong Toffers re a NEM/NCM/GGP Lithium deal etc, there are plenty of other opportunities outside of Australia for Rio to buy a potential stake in a Lithium discovery/operation.

Agree Matty, whoever owns Telfer after the NEM/NCM dust has settled, they Telfer/final owners... will not care who owns what, or where the ore comes from, as long as the plant input is fully optimized.IMHO

Rio JV and the feeding of Telfer?, great potential IMO.
