The developing electric power grid is undergoing an unprecedented revolution with distributed and intermittent energy sources growing rapidly, pushed by environmental regulation, incentives and policies adapted to reduce the long-term effects of climate change.

Technologies such as electric cars, storage systems and low-net independent energy buildings are shifting consumers from passive buyers to active users, who are managing their electricity use. As a result, the electric power grid constantly requires increased flexibility to deliver high-quality electric power to its customers while maintaining stable and reliable operations.

Power generators are therefore mandated to provide high-fidelity power system simulation reports verifying the grid code compliance for connection allowance. Simulations are based on components and control systems simulation models, or digital twins, that are gaining importance due to their reliability.

TSOs require validation of digital twins by site measurements or components’ certifications, which are costly and time intensive. Tests must be run for commissioning and operation of power plant components and control systems.

The aim of the TechTalk will be to:

- Explore the UK Grid Code, examine what they are and the main technical requirements (for generator, excitation and governor)

- Discuss Simulation modelling, highlighting Power System Modelling and Simulation platforms as well as typical simulations required by grid codes and processes of a simulation project

- Introduce a set of unique modelling, analysis, computer and real-time simulations and commissioning services ABB has developed to serve its customers.

Bondy, thanks for clarification and very valuable information.

I just hope we get a good rise soon though as I’ve been waiting a long time already so it would be good to take something out in the short term.

I feel a bit more confident again about something coming from the EE weekend as there appears to be room for more than one player.

Must admit I was a bit miffed when I saw the post earlier though, it looked like AFC were being edged out but I realise that is not necessarily the case now.

It certainly looks, on the surface of it that they are sitting round the table.

The question is, are AFC sitting round a table too?

It doesn't matter what system Teco use, it doesn't matter how expensive it is and it doesn't matter how it works.

They have just got a very large contract in Neom. We don't!!

Going back to my earlier question, is there still the chance that we could make an announcement about securing an order in Neom?

It's all very well saying it's a big World and plenty to go around but I've been a shareholder in AFC for almost 10 years, and when I see what is being built in Neom and know that we are showcasing our product there, it's a bit sore seeing a competitor waltz in 4 days before us and pick up a big contract.

Still, I ask, is there still a chance that we could also get an order this weekend from the Saudis?

Seriously though, where doe this leave us? wrong footed or is there room for AFC to be part of this too?

I really thought an announcement like this would land on Monday but with AFC written all over it.

I don't know enough about the technicalities but it doesn't look good, hopefully someone with more technical knowledge can have something more positive to add?

Come on AFC let’s have a great Extreme E weekend and get a big announcement next Monday

I can’t stop thinking that something big is going to happen between AFC and Saudi or more so Neom.

If this is the case and a load of fuels cells are going to be ordered for Neom surely the deal must already be done and next weekend the signing and media ceremony in front of the worlds media. With an RNS confirmation of what’s been sold next Monday morning.

I’d say this is based merely on optimism and a hunch but it’s more than that, there has been a lot of murmurings and some clues pointing towards this so yes, I live in hope for next Monday morning RNS.

IF we get an RNS every week for the next 2 months with everything that’s been announced becoming real term orders, the broker targets could be reached easily.

But that really would be a big IF

Would be nice though and possible.

I’m very interested to see what, if anything is announced around the Extreme E event in Neom. Potentially the launch pad for a raft of news updates.

We were up around 23% last week on Extreme E news we already knew!

Just imagine how much we would rise if something big dropped like an order from Saudi, the British army, Amazon data centres, Norwegian ship orders, diesel generator replacements or any of the many other possibilities.

I suspect AFC sp would fly if any one of these came to pass, not to think what would happen if several come in within a short space of time which is not beyond the realms of possibility

Much as I am very disappointed by our current sp and lack of new news at the moment, I have a good feeling about Extreme E.

Deals and negotiations have taken place at EE events, contacts have been made and I’m sure discussions have taken place.

It would be great to get a big juicy RNS any day now about Mace, Acciona or any of the others we are expecting but it could be possible that something big is brewing and being finalised with the Saudis and where better to make the announcement than when the eyes of the World are watching Neom.

I’ve thought this for some time now and although I have nothing substantial to base this on, there have been some clues.

So although disappointed at the moment, that will subside if we get a big announcement prior to, during or just after the Extreme E event in Neom.

Green Ammonia, the future for exporting renewable energy by sea

The article from Recharge explains well why green ammonia is shaping up to be the principal medium for exporting hydrogen from desert coastal regions with abundant wind+sun in Chile, Saudi, Australia, Namibia. Recent reports suggest 85% of planned hydrogen export projects will involve ammonia.

4 merits vs LH2

Firstly ammonia has much better volumetric energy density than liquid hydrogen - +60% at 3,730kWh/m3 when stored in its standard liquid form at minus 33.3°C.

Secondly producing green ammonia may be cheaper than liquid hydrogen per MWh due to the higher conversion costs of hydrogen liquefaction compared to ammonia synthesis. According to a study by Sumitomo Chemical, LH2 would cost about $200 per MWh to produce (at USD3/Kg) compared to just under $88/MWh for liquid ammonia.

Thirdly the seaborne trade in ammonia is already well established whilst commercial operation of high-capacity LH2 ships is not targeted until the 2030s. A world-scale ammonia plant produces about two million tonnes per year, but the largest LH2 plants being proposed are in the range of 15,000-30,000 tonnes annually.

Fourthly ammonia has lower boil-off risk compared to LH2
