RMG -
We have met with Royal Mail Group today. Negotiations are continuing. Our postal executive will meet tomorrow afternoon.
We understand how important it is to communicate directly with members and we will do everything possible to bring you an update as soon as we can. This will be Wednesday at the very latest.
Perhaps a similar deal for RMG to follow?
Ballot papers go out this week to around 1,400 Royal Mail Property & Facilities Solutions Limited (PFSL) cleaners, admin and building maintenance workers asking for their endorsement of a negotiated pay and associated issues agreement…
Under the agreement, pay rates for PFSL’s engineers increase by 7 per cent – backdated to 1st October 2022 – and then a further 4 per cent from 1st April 2023, while admin workers will see their pay rise by 5 per cent – backdated to 1st April 2022 – and another 3 per cent effective from 1st April 2023, plus a one-off £250(pro rata for part-time employees) cash pay-out.
Dynamofc I didn't say you knew very little. You told us 500 managers were unhappy, so you knew that. You are correct the business would get rid of that agency that didn't cross the picket line. Perhaps most of the agency were amongst those that did go in. As I say there are more functions in RMG than just delivery, try Customer Service, MDEC (if it's still called that) processing, transport, finance, HR some with decent number of agency many who have been there years and union members. I also don't claim to know everything about RMG but I will post facts and provide links when I can and admit when I dont know something or get it wrong.
Dynamofc I was being generous so VR leavers to come into the numbers, I guess those that have signed up will keep paying their dues until they actually leave the building. Just because you don't know doesn't make it not true. I know there are agency CWU members some have even posted on CWU FB (last week) saying how disgusted they are that they are being so badly treated. Also, RM is bigger than just your office, there are hundreds of agency in other parts of the business and some have been employed for years. At the end of the day it's still 3k fewer members with more to come.
DynamoFC you are right and some of the VR and leavers will have flowed into the numbers. Not sure if we will get any type of breakdown, just the whole numbers. I expect some will be the agency CWU members that the CWU are throwing under the bus, so much for every member counts.
Hounddog10 thanks and totally agree. I have mentioned the "loans" before and there have been 3 or 4 on the list previously. I think they have been classed as mortgage loans at a preferred rate. I am sure all the members would have liked to have availed themselves of these better terms, all equal and all that or are they just reserved for those at the top of the CWU pyramid. It was picked up by the TUC and basically they were told to stop them.

Under documents 2021 Annual report and accounts.
Hounddog10/Redceo I would need to look through some files, but I am sure the CWU invest in several funds so happy to play the stock market in effect with their members money and are having to pay an additional £850k per annum to close their pension deficit. It is very much in their interests to keep the members fees coming in and the loss of 3k members at last report would not be welcome.
Oligarch I agree with most of your summary. Firstly, I cant decide if the newly refreshed negotiating team two Non Exec BOD members is a good thing ie a bit more detached from direct operations no history with DW/CWU or the business just stalling. I am hopeful we do get a joint statement today but not knowing the exact detail of what CWU has demanded I think at best we could see a pause in EA and a written commitment to review all current conduct cases by a certain date. It is unlikely that the business would agree to just let everyone return to the workplace tomorrow given there are some alleged serious incidents to be considered. Some of these cases can take months and months and I was involved in quite a few including some appeals which took a year to get to that stage.
Re revisions I am sure everyone will be doing their level best to make these work well, not everyone, but I would again expect an agreement to relook at these but a whole chunk will be made to stick.
Will we see a statement today? not sure. The business might let the deadline pass just to show they will not be threatened. What will the union do tonight? Call a week-long strike?
I genuinely hope for a form of words from both sides that do allow progress. On balance I think at best we will get a holding statement today to say talks are ongoing.
Time2Kill I am surprised it takes them 2 years to decide its not for them when there are so many better paid jobs out there. It's great we have so many long termers happy to stay around.
I cant see anyone specifically referencing Tracked but to suggest prioritisation of streams of traffic be it Tracked, specials, parcels, urgent NHS letters don't or didn't get impacted by Covid or IA is not correct.
Its worth people understanding what the delivery specifications and aims are for contractual business tracked items and say first class letters.
Oligarch I totally agree with you and most management teams would make sensible local decisions daily including on calls and in written communications.
Has no one heard anything from the CWU in last 24 hrs as DW/AF were meeting with the newly refreshed RMG team of 2 non exec BOD members on Friday and possibly today and Sunday. Deadline of Monday for the joint statement around 2 key issues EA and Conduct cases.
I know sometimes people are kept in the dark under confidentiality but surely a one liner to say talks have taken place or/and are ongoing would be okay. They did find time to put on a childish video about EastEnders and Ricky I think most members would prefer an adult update.
Oligarch yes, the country is suffering from a labour shortage and all businesses need to up their game to be more attractive to potential employees. RMG does seem to be quite good at getting agency in and perhaps if we were smarter in retaining the best of these and getting them onto full long-term contracts that would help. The business needs to look at this urgently and you could apply the same to elements of regular overtime these could be converted into some contracted employees. Both channels give the business elements of flexibility when reducing resources.
My understanding is the CWU want to reduce agency as DW said in his latest update, which is a disgrace IMO as many of these have now been with the business for a number of years and lots are CWU members (fact) to be actively advocating getting rid of these members is shocking surely, they should be representing them and pushing the business to make them substantive. Solidarity brothers/sisters and all that.
Oligarch I fully support whistleblowing and if anyone has proof, strategy documents etc they should supply it to relevant authorities. I don't think a handwritten flip chart or a home/office made poster would hold much weight. You know as well as me some of these have been on a board since the first IA. I am not being naive that the business has likely been happy for parcels to take precedent through covid/IA and have not been in a hurry to clarify.
I am sure nobody would be naughty enough to make up their own and send in? disgruntled ex-employees.
In fact, I might do one saying letters must always have priority even if you have 30 York's of parcels on the dock and your local big business needs the empties returned at 1100am each day.
At the end of the day, it will come out in the wash and facts and truth should always take precedence.
Cartooncharacter welcome to the board. Thanks for sharing. I am sure there will be some quite rightly annoyed if they have been following instructions and deploying what they have been asked to do. Hopefully, they gave their feedback if they were unhappy. I am sure most managers have been asked to make changes they personally don't agree with but unfortunately that can be part of the role.
I hope your investment here works out for you.
Oligarch I agree the BOD may here some more from the SC. I think if we were a government department rather than a listed company the SC would have more powers. They will focus on the USO issues and of course OFCOM will take the lead in that case.
There are many comments saying that changes are/have been going on this week and more planned for today/Monday. Maybe we will start to pick up more comments likes Brochs saying that revisions and some other changes are indeed stopping or being reversed to be redone. Whatever you think of the BOD they won't be stupid to put themselves at risk and other than the USO issues being a PLC they can make what other business decisions they deem appropriate. It will be the business that carries the can for any USO failures.
I expect we will get an update from both parties no later than Monday.
Broch that is good news, perhaps they will truly work together and be sensible about it all and still deliver savings as needed and recognised/confirmed by DW yesterday. It must be bad in your office if not clearing during the quietest period.
Time2Kill I hope it comes some time today. The business may wait until Monday's deadline as it looks like they are still rushing in as many changes as they can until then. Putting in worst case scenarios and then reducing some when an agreement is struck. Not sure that will sit well with Dave Wards statement that the CWU will repair all local issues perhaps that will mean local CWU engagement and tweaking some and backing out of others.
I can't see the business reversing wholesale changes on revisions, resigns, collapsing duties, start finish times etc. I might be wrong.
Listened to the full session from DW/AF it was interesting. Waiting for the joint statement to be agreed and it can then be issued. Covers a range of issues the key one being the cessation of EA and a stop on Conduct cases to be agreed by RMG by COP Monday at latest. Mentioned that 2 other BOD members will be leading the business side 2 of the non-exec BOD meeting with DW/AF Sir Brendan Barbour and the Chief conciliator from ACAS.
DW recognised the dire position of the business financials and the need for job losses (letting agency go) and savings to be made. If the Monday hurdle is crossed DW confident that with the new refreshed approached and negotiators an agreement can be made within 3 weeks. Commented on select committee session and lots more covered as well.
