Faron Pharmaceuticals in TURKU , for its part, is developing a new drug called interferon, which is hoped to help treat coronavirus-damaged lungs. Traumakine is still undergoing tests and has not yet been authorized.

Traumakine is an intensive care drug designed to treat arthritis in acute respiratory failure. The disease carries a significant risk of death: the patient dies because the body does not receive enough oxygen. According to preliminary studies, Ards has developed in up to 6% of all confirmed coronavirus cases.

On Sunday, MTV reported on a Traumakine project developed by Faron Pharmaceuticals, a Turku-based pharmaceutical company that may help with lung disease caused by coronavirus.

Markku Jalkanen, Managing Director of Faron Pharmaceuticals Oy, said that Traumakine is intended to prevent or limit the onset or progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) by restoring capillary integrity.

Placing on the market of the finished medicinal product is subject to regulatory approval through clinical trials and is not available until further investigation. Jalkanen estimates that it will take 2-3 years to obtain a marketing authorization.
