Faced with water stress exacerbated by the effects of climate change, Morocco is taking cutting-edge measures to sustainably secure its water supply, in particular through the implementation of the National Program for the Supply of Drinking Water and Irrigation (PNAEPI) 2020-2027, the construction of new dams and the implementation of innovative solutions in the field of seawater desalination.
As a follow-up to the High Royal Directives contained in the royal speech of October 14, 2022, marking the opening of the first session of the second legislative year of the eleventh legislature, mega-projects were implemented within the framework of the PNAEPI, a program which, three years after its launch, was allocated a total budget of 143 billion dirhams (MMDH), focusing mainly on the mobilization of water resources through the construction of vast water storage infrastructures.
It is within this framework that the recently completed project for the interconnection of the Sebou and Bouregreg basins falls, which targets a capacity of one million cubic meters of water per day, or a volume of 360 million m³ per year, through the diversion of excess water from the Sebou basin, which was lost in the Atlantic Ocean, to the Bouregreg basin in order to ensure the supply of drinking water to the axis Rabat [
